The first thing I have to do is apologize to the Aussies. I have been VERY critical of Aussie beef in the past. I was told by an informed source that what was supposedly Aussie beef was likely Thai beef. I DO know that it was as tough as shoe leather. Also, the last Thai French beef I bought at Tesco Lotus wasn't good either. The only one that enjoyed the Thai French beef was my dog Cookie. He thought it was great.

With that out of the way, I had some things I had to do in Udon Thani. While there, I was talking to Mr. gas grill maker, Doc. Doc told me about some Aussie beef that was very good. Since Doc is from the USA, he knows what good beef is. We made the drive to JingJoes, had a beer and looked at the steaks. I chose eight or nine decent looking rib eyes. I'm not sure what they cost but the lot was a little more than 800 baht. When I got back home, I was surprised to see my wife was cooking chicken on Doc's gas grill. One of the steaks was already cooking within ten minutes of me getting home. That steak was without a doubt the absolute best steak I have ever had in Thailand. Tender, juicy and delicious. Apparently they also sell double smoked bacon. Unfortunately they had none of that in stock. Doc said the double smoked bacon is great.

I have written before about how I feel for the price Thai French Meets in Sakon Nakhon have very good steaks. I have always bought them right from their slaughter house in Sakon Nahkon, I did not know you could get them from Tesco Lotus. My greatest problem is the distance I have to go to get the steak, over 150 Kms. one way, to a destination I would not go to if it were not for the steak, with the price of Diesel nowadays that raises the price of the steak considerably. Well now I am saved. There is now an abattoir just 25 kms. from my house (an easy ride on my Honda Phantom) where I can now get meat as good if not better than the Thai French Meat Company, and their prices are a little cheaper. On Friday March 7 I bought 4 big rib eyes, they were just under 500 baht a kilo, I believe 485. They came off a slab that was from a cow slaughtered February 29, so the meat had aged a week. They vacuumed packed the steaks individually for me and I put them in my fridge and let them age another 9 days for a total of 16 days. Last Sunday I took one out and cut it in two, it was to big for one. I then barbecued it up. It was delicious, lots of favour and tender. I put the rest of the steaks in the freezer and will enjoy them over the next month or so. For anybody living in the Mukdahan Roi-et Kalasin corner the company is on High-way 4042 on the Mukdahan side of Nong Sung. If driving from Kuchinarai to Mukdahan go past the police box/ATM machine in Nong Sung and past the district office, maybe about 4 kms down the road on the left side of the road is a petrol station, it is one of the green coloured ones, across the road from it back maybe 50 metres is a large white building, that is the abattoir. They slaughter their cows on Friday morning, so that is the best time to go. The meat is not shown so you have to ask, they bring it out and will cut to any size you want. Gary remember even in the United States you will get the odd bad steak from your local butcher who has always supplied you with good meat, so don't get too down on the Thai French Meat Company. Like yourself, I have found the Thai-French Beef from Sakhon Nakhon to be the best available in Issan... Now you give me hope for a new outlet, and on my way to Mukdahan for whatever Visa events come up... In fact I will be heading that way the first part of next week, so will try to locate the place you discribed... Hopefully it being either Monday or Tuesday, rather than Friday will not alter the selection nor quality too much...

Is this the small bar owned by an Aussie named Rob? A good man, if this is his bar.

I only met him briefly but, Yes, I think that is the guy. There are two locations and this one is the one in the city. Actually kind of hard to find being in not much more than a narrow alley. I would never have found it if I had not been with Doc.
