Saraphi district lung cancer sickness and death highest in Thailand

CMU research indicated Radon gas, smoke dust and toxic fumes as cause

Saksit Meesubkwang

The results of a research project carried out by the Faculty of Medical Science at Chiang Mai University have shown that
residents in Saraphi district have the highest number of lung cancer deaths and sickness in the whole country.
Taking a figure of 100,000, 09% were suffering from the disease, and 04% had died from it,
figures which are 5 times higher then in the rest of Thailand.
The location and topography of the area makes it vulnerable to the release from under the ground of the gas Radon, a known carcinogen; smoke from burning, toxic fumes and minuscule dust particles are exacerbating the problem. Solutions include the raising of properties to improve ventilation, the repair of any cracks in walls in an effort to prevent penetration of the gas, and the planting of numerous trees which will help to absorb the gas and dust.

fine lets repair those cracks on those walls, forget about gas seeping in through the windows :o yeah let them trees ABSORB that gas and some dust.

this report feels like BS to me.. what about San Kampheng??

Glad I don't live in Saraphi, scary stuff, but really confirm it as correct before getting too worried.

Nice map of Chiang Mai by the way, where can I get a copy of that?

  • 10 months later...

We live quite close to this area and I'd like to get our house tested for radon - quite a simple procedure if I recall. Anyone know who I should contact (either private or local authority)?
