Where did I go wrong?

My Girlfriend has just been refused a holiday visa to come to England for one month.

She received a phone call to say that it was because we have not known each other long enough and we are not married!!

I know that all the paperwork was correct and all documents were supplied, in addition I supplied all my bank statements/pay slips, proof of address and ability to support her if sponsorship was required.

Also proof that she has her own business (proper registered business that pays thai tax) proof of home ownership and the fact that she has a dependent son to return to.

We met 6 months ago on the internet :o and I went to Thailand in February.

Also she had no problem getting a German visa in 2006 to visit her sister.

So where did I go wrong ?

If a visa is refused, a refusal notice which gives the reasons why, must be issued. Ask your g/f to send a copy of this to you and you can then establish the visa officer's reasoning. I have never heard of a visa application being refused over the telephone before.

Scouse.

Sorry, got my wires crossed, seems her sister picked up the letter in bkk and phoned.

I've got the reference number now.

Ask your g/f or her sister to scan and e-mail the refusal notice to you and you will then be able to establish the visa officer's thinking.

Just talked to my g/fs uncle, his english is pretty good.

Seems the reason is we have not known each other long enough!

He is going to email the letter to me.

Is there a time requirement to know someone? or is this just the officer in controls thoughts?

Unfortunately you will find it very difficult to obtain a visa for your g/f if you have only known her for 6 months and only meet her once for a couple of weeks. which will help your case is to give your g/f a record of all the phone calls and emails you have to show you talk on a regular basis. A copy of your passport pages to show you have visited her on a regular basis and it's not a fling. A selection of photos from various trips you took together and photos with you and her family on various occasions. Also a good covering letter explaining why you want her to come to the UK is also useful. You say you talked to your g/f uncle as his English is pretty good, can your g/f speak good English? as that is another major consideration for the immigration department.

I hope this is of some help.

There is no requirement to have known someone for a prescribed length of time, but it is for the visa applicant to satisfy the visa officer that s/he will leave the UK at the end of the visit. If, so the argument goes, the relationship is not well-founded, the visa officer may contend that the presented reason for the visit is undermined and he can't therefore be satisfied that the visa applicant will leave the UK at the end of the trip.
