I returned from holiday abroad yesterday and heard about the passing of Mr. Daniel Jackson to my great dismay.

Mr. Jackson was also known as Black Jack, and was one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet.

Black Jack once told me "Huggy, if you want to find a good girl here in Thailand you have to go to Isaan and pick the fruit off the tree. Skip the fruit that's been on the ground too long."

I loved that analogy.

Jack, may heaven hold a lot of Isaan girls for you, we're going to miss you.

RIP Jack

Dan Jackson passed away this week. Dan was a friend of everyone that he met. He brought smiles and happiness to those that he touched.

He was a passoniate father and loved and cared for his daughter.

His rounds at the Longhorn Saloon were always filled with fun.

Dan, has gone in peace and may he rest forever.

Let me first say that Phuket lost a great friend, Jack. I knew him from when we both lived in Villa 2 back in 2002 and witnessed his "birth" from being a married guy with a lovely wife, Kesarn, into being a dad.

Nikki was his pride and joy. His family was his pride and joy.

Today, April 18th., his cremation will be done at Wat Sansook, right turn from huge circle (passing Robinsons).

I often argued with Jack. We were best of friends. I am not the only one, but let me tell you, he had many many friends who enjoyed his cantanquerous, nagging, loving and often quite shocking views of life in Thailand and his life as an American of color.

We always laughed about how Thais sometimes thing he is Thai. People often approached him and would start the conversation in Thai.

He went through hel_l for almost a year, dealing with the construction folks building his house. That house was his pride and joy.

In saying that....... <deleted> is the local rag, Phuket Gazette, doing by labelling him "Mr Jackson was a well-educated and articulate man".

Now, for most Americans, for the greater part of our society, we are educated. Even rednecks in the deep south are more educated than some of the folks working in that place.

Of the 7 odd years that I have been here and forced to read that paper, I have never heard anyone labelled "educated". Have you?

Jack, god bless you, my friend. May you rest in peace...

And for you, Phuket Gazette, Jim Crow ended decades ago. Shame on you, shame shame shame......................

I have heard the term "well educated" used often. It is one of those meaningless terms used to describe someone of whom the speaker or writer had no personal experience. We are all "well educated", even the bushmen of Africa, in the information we need to survive and live in our world. There are some people who are "well educated" to the point of PhD but are complete ar5eholes and yet there are those that have virtually no formal education or qualifications that are the best one could wish to meet. So "well educated" is meaningless and I am sure the writer meant no offence nor had any intention to denigrate the person in question.

I would suggest that you forgive and forget the Phuket Gazette's apparent slur on your friend's character, I am sure they never intended it that way but maybe their lack of knowledge of the nuances of the English language was a factor.

btw I have read the term often in the newspapers etc back in the UK, the mother of the language so for a Thai to fall in the perceived trap aint so bad after all.

I really doubt that any offence was intended.

Just as many people I know would be extremely offended by being described as someone "of colour", you used the term and obviously meant no offence by it.

I'd agree that quality of the Gazette is a bit of a joke these days though...

I believe they mean it as a compliment. If you say someone here (Ireland) is well educated it means you are articulate, well spoken, knowlegable and an all round guy person. For sure a compliment to him.I never met him but seems a good guy has gone to other pastures. RIP. and speedy journey.

Perhaps......

In any event, he will be sorely missed by a great number of the folks who knew him. I will miss him sitting up in his chair when I make a point and he really thinks I said something stupid and shoots me down with tact, succinctly-placed phrases.

I could not deal with the grief at his cremation. I just sat in the car, today. I hope he did not mind.

After reading the last posts that reference "colour" and "Black" I realize now that the deceased was an afro-american. Thing is I didn't know that when I saw the reference to well educated and just took for granted that he had a good education and a slur didn't even cross my mind. I'm well educated as well. Still doesn't get me a pass from the folks that try to push suits and tuktuk rides on me though.
