My TW and her daughter are approaching 7 years (2 on Temp. Residency and 5 on Permanent Residency) and we will soon have to apply an RRV to get another 5 years.

On our initial application and subsequent interviews we clearly stated that the Residency Application was placed for convenience only and we intended to spend most of our time here in Thailand. I might add that it was the Embassy Staff who suggested we apply as TW had had some 8 visitors visas over a short period of time.

Has anyone applied for the RRV who is in a similar situation to ourselves? I have a feeling that although she has an Aust. Tax File Number and has investments in Aust. in her name the fact that they would not have spent any more than 6 months collectively in the country might bite us on the arse.

From my inderstanding. To get a RRV you must have been in Oz for 2 years. But you can also get one if you have been there less. You just have to show that you have enough ties to the country. ie property, job etc. I myself will have to apply for one if i want to leave here on holiday. Come October i will have been back here 2 years in Oz.

has investments in Aust. in her name the

You should probably be ok. It costs $120 AUD to apply here in Oz.

Latest information on 5 year RRVs here.

http://www.immi.gov.au/migrants/residents/155/index.htm

(As a matter of interest most RRV holders are UK citizens, and I know of one who has held RRVs for over 30years.)

indeed, they are the group who are least likely to naturalise as Australian citizens. I beleive is mainly because the majority came before the passing of the Australia Act 1984, and as British subjects in Australia prior to that date, were given the same rights as citizens to vote etc. This becoming a citizen was of little value to them.

Thanks for the input guys. Before the OP I spent some time going over their web site and downloading the forms. Some confusing questions eg.

Question 22 - Did you first arrive in Australia as a migrant? TW has to answer NO as she was a tourist but in answering that they ask for a date you were granted Perminant Residence in Australia. She was granted residence by the Embassy in Bangkok. I can guess the first applies to her entry after approval and answer YES and give a date???

Then there's the area for people included on her passport and application. TW's daughter was on the original application she is now 13, do I have to do a seperate RRV for her?

Thanks again
