Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said on Sunday that the tourist resort island of Phuket needs rehabilitation and support from central government to enhance the island’s efficiency to accommodate a vast number of international tourists each year. During his weekly television address on NBT, the prime minister stated that he received direct complaints from local businesses who called for central government support in rehabilitating the island which has been exploited by tourism growth. Phuket generates almost 100 billion baht in revenue from the tourism industry, so the budget allocated to the island should not be counted according to population ratio as it has to cater to vast number of visitors yearly. The prime minister said he would discuss with the Minister of Interior as the island needs to be rehabilitated as transport and water supply are not sufficient, for example. On local side, the Phuket Tourist Association President Maitri Nareukhatpichai welcomed the Prime Minister’s address saying that it is a good idea and hopes to see it activated as it will be beneficial to the tourism industry. He also suggests that the government should consider the issue an urgent matter. Maitri also calls for public and private sectors on the island to fully support the idea and that it should gear into action soon.

Rehabilitation as in trashcans, crosswalks with trafficlights and a proper sewage system? Then I'm all for it. Some big megaproject that gets mired in corruption and deficiencies then count me as one that says, oh no, not again.

In response to Prime Minister Samak Sundarawes’s television address on Sunday about the idea to establish of board of administration to govern Phuket, the Governor Nirund Kalayanamit voiced his support to the idea saying that it would be beneficial to the island as any development or problems occurring would be filtered and considered by a panel. He stresses that the local authority is prepared and has proposed all mega projects for development to the central government since it took office. This includes the feasibility study of Phuket Bay development, an international convention centre and the incinerator. He believes that the prime minister will assign his deputies or responsible agencies to hold meetings with the provincial authority.

The Vice Chairman of the Real Estate Club of Phuket, Thanusak Puengdetch expressed his agreement with Prime Minister Samak Sundarawes about the proposed establishment of board of administration to map out policy and tackle problems for Phuket province. Mr. Thanusak further stated that Phuket is suitable for a special administrative authority as it earns over 90 billion baht from tourism each year. If the island can be developed on its own, many major development projects will be implemented easier. They include transportation system, infrastructure as well as public sector investment. He however stresses that the new form of administration proposed must also create unity among local government bodies.

More studies, more lining of pockets, and more of nothing getting solved.

Word out on the street is that Samak just wants to see if he can get some more money out of Phuket while he is still in power. Word also out on the street is he may not be for much longer.

They're pretty cynical out on those Phuket streets :-)

Some months ago Pukette Gazette ran an article on the overcrowding at the Phuket City prison jail.

The Warden was begging and begging for relief

There is 50 Rai at the smaller work release jail out in Manik that should be developed for this purpose but instead, just down the road they are building huge ornate governmental medical centre complex complete with deluxe housing with a view of the lake.

It's been sitting empty for 6 months while landscaping is going on.

Thais have no concept of the future..something about the tropical peoples , not having to store food for the winter has them genetically unable to plan or care about anything .

Yes, the Thai population as a whole is a failure. They care about nothing and must be destroyed. Obviously some serious scientific evidence has gone into this revelation that Thais suck because they've never had to stock up on food for the winter months. Squirrels, on the other hand, are a far superior race, given their ability to find and collect nuts in preparation for the winter.

How about a squirrel bash, where we all dress up as squirrels and start attacking each other outside the governor's house? We could make signs that read "Squirrels rule, Thais suck".

Who's with me?

Don't forget the bikinis .

My " Squirrel nuts " theory has merit- And I did not say Thai, you inserted that so you could have a tizzy fit. I said Tropical peoples ... though OK, perhaps not genetically but not having to store food generation after generation must alter behavior patterns - somewhat.

You think the work ethic of tropical indigenous people is equal to that of say- some rugged northerners of say Greenland ??

Don't you think there's a reason the northern Chinese who have come to SE Asia have been so successful?

Yes, you're right. When you wrote "Thais have no concept of the future", you didn't mean Thais at all. I should have seen that. My mistake.

And your qualifier for that statement (about Thais) being "something about the tropical peoples , not having to store food for the winter has them genetically unable to plan or care about anything" -- obviously nothing to do with your theories on Thai people. You just chucked it in there for the hel_l of it, right?

Thanks for clearing that up.
