My wife and recently moved to Bang Saray. When in BKK, I used Bumrungrad whenever I needed medical assistance. What would be equivalent hospital in Pattaya/Sattahip region?

Bangkok/pataya hospital, sukhumvit rd north,is a great hospital if private medical insurance.I had an op 4 yearsago and was looked after like a king for 2 days.

I use Bangkok Pattaya Hospital but much much much prefer Bumrungrad so usually go there. But I do believe that nursing care is better at BPH.

I have only had dental work carried at at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, but they were excellent. I had treatment lasting more than 25 hours and no problems (caps and root canal work - yuk).

However, I went there last year and was diagnosed with a 'dodgy' hip. The doctor was very keen to perform the hip replacement operation and said it needed to be operated on immediately.

I was then hurried around to the cashier to be given a quote for the work and sent on my way. He told me in no uncertain terms that if I did not have this operation immediately I would be deformed and painted a very bleak picture indeed.

That was a year ago and after, among other things, I researched hip operations on the Internet and contacted the Arthritis Research Council in the UK, I realised that the advice he gave me was wrong.

In fact I was told by ARC to persevere with the (slight) pain I have for as long as possible - delaying any operation until it was really needed.

I only telll you this so you realise that in some cases, BPH may be more interested in money than the good of the patient. I cannot say if this is for all cases at BPH or all doctors, but I have to say in my case I feel this was the case.

Good luck with finding the hospital.

As you are in Bang Sare you might consider using the Queen Sirikit Naval Hospital at Sattahip - only about 30 minutes away from where you are.

This is a public hospital, run by the Thai Navy and will accept non-Thai patients. I have recently had treatment there for an ankle injury and I have been very pleased with the care that I received. My Thai step-son has also had treatment there for an abdominal infection and again the treatment received was of the highest standard. In both instances, the cost of treatment was a very small fraction of what it would have been in any of the Pattaya private hospitals.

The only slight downside to the place is that, initially, you really need a Thai speaker with you as only limited English is spoken by the nursing staff. The place is not run like a luxury hotel, unlike a couple of Pattaya establishments that I can think of, and you do have to take a ticket and wait in line. For all normal purposes it seems to be fine - if you've got something seriously wrong then you might consider going back to Bumrungrad.

I believe that there are also a couple of good hospitals in Sri Racha but I don't have any experience of them. Maybe someone on this forum can give you more info.

Yes, one has to be careful about "has to be operated on immediately". Of course some things do have to be operated immediately such as ruptured appendix.

I had an eye problem so went to have checked and was told retinas should be operated on and "I will do right now while eyes dilated". I said no thank you and went to Bumrungrad where was told retinas perfectly fine. Eye problem I was having gradually went away.

Another diagnosis after 3 days of tests was constipation. 3 months later patient diagnosed with inoperable Stage IV gastric cancer. I don't believe that such a cancer can develop in 3 months.

Had an infection in urinary bladder and thought OK will go get culture and sensitivity done and told doctor that's what I wanted. Doctor did urinalysis and said no infection. I said please do C & S. and start me on antibiotic. C & S came back showing bacteria that would respond to prescribed antibiotic. I told Doctor that good he had learned something.

Another public hospital, about 45 minutes away is Rayong Hospital. I wouldn't go there for minor stuff, but they do good work for major surgeries. I got in a motorbike accident and broke my leg. Surgery, 10-day hospitalization in a private room, and 3 follow-up exams with x-rays cost 30,000 baht. I was happy with the results. The staff speaks sufficient English.

You will not find at any hospital in the Pattaya area the quality of expertise you can find in Bangkok. Altho affiliated with Bangkok Hospital in Bkk, BPH's roster of physicians is no comparison at all, as you will quickly see if you peruse their website.

As with any place, people's comments on thep lace have been mixed, somep ositive, some negative, but I'd have to say that the negatives oputnumber the positives in the case of BPH, and personally I have nopt found specialistsio f the qualifications I consider necessary any of the many times I have gone through their website. This doesn't mean they don't have any specialists who are good (in particular, there's a dermatologist knopwledgable about skin cancer that sevral memebsr have recommeneded) but the vast majority are no where near as qualified as what can be found in Bangkok.

Personally I would go to Bangkok unless the problem were very routine OR it was such an emergency that there wasn't enough time to get there.

Has anyone had a delay in receiving test results from BPH?. We have been waiting for more than a week after the date given, despite repeated phone calls & emails.

What type of test was this? I'm just wondering if it would be something they had to send to be perfromed elsewhere, which might cause delays beyond their control. (It would also, unfortunately, increase the possibility of a lost specimen or lost lab report).

If you are in the Pattaya area I suggest you go in person and speak directly to the head nurse of the relevant department. If that is not possible then your best recourse is by phone but be sure to get through to the head nusre of that departament, don't talk to anyone else. have your hospital number handy, stress that the rersults were supposed to have been available a week ago, and ask that she verify withj the lab that the specimen was received and the test either perfromed or in process.

Hospitals (and for that matter, businesses) in Thailand are notoriuosly poor in responding to emails, at least emails in English.

The main thing one worries about is that they may just be telling you "not ready yet" when in fact the specimen or results have been lost. -- which does happen, all the more so if the test is being conducted somewhere else. Hence you need someone to check for you and verify that if the test was actually done and, if so, obtain a copy of the results. Otherwise they may just look for the results, not see any and keep saying "not yet"....

The nurse at BUPA office Pattaya recommended Phayathai hospital in Siracha to us. We liked it

very much. It's not like a luxury hotel, but a regular hospital and doesn't overcharge foreigners.

When we were there they were also in the process of remodeling. The only thing I don't like about

going there is the traffic and distance.

My friend had a plastic surgeon consult for 100baht.

Normally we use Queen Sirikit for everyday illnesses...and they offer most testing for health checkups.

I've heard some good reports from friends about Bangkok Rayong Hospital. They have specialist that come

in from Bangkok on certain days. Prices are way better than Pattaya too.

We are back home in the north of Thailand so cannot get to the hospital - still no email from them. We came back here in case we need to prepare things to go to get treatment.

The test may have been sent elsewhere, possibly Bangkok but thats not far, for them.

It's not far but whenver specimens are sent to another facility the risk of lost specimen or lost result (which can happen even within the hospital) automatically doubles. In addition, if BPH was not the place that would perfrom the test then their estimate of the time required may have been off as it would depend upon workload at the receiving lab among other things.

You need to get someone to verify (1) that the specimen arrived at whatever lab was going to do the test. (2) if so, whether the test has been done or not. (3) if arrived and done, what happened to the report of the results and, if necessary, have a copy of the original report resent by fax.

That is going to require some calling around to determine. The person who would actually make such calls would usually be the nurse in charge so try to talk to her on the phone directly. She is not the person who would see your incoming emails and as mentioned emails are not usually a very good way to communicate with Thai hospitals. They are read by clerks who at most call another clerk who checks your file -- which, as we already know, does not contain the results.

You need to get the matter in the hands of someone who can make the needed phone calls to track down what has occurred.

If you continue to not get satidfaction then I would call the doctor in charge, but he is not going to have the time to track this down, the most he is going to do is ask the head nurse to see to it, which is why I would start with her to begin with.

It would seem that the specimens have probably been sent to the central lab. The problem they have, is that the logistics department that co-ordinate these movements do not have a very efficient specimen tracking software system at present. When they eventually get around to implementing it (sometime soon), problems such as these will be greatly reduced, and the results will be able to be pulled down quicker, by either the lab, nurse or CS.

I was in a motorbike accident in May 2007 and both bones in my wrist were seperated from the joints (please excuse my lack of medical terminology). I had surgery at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital where the put a steele plate in my wrist (the bones were jammed too far back for any type of cast, etc). I had follow-ups with x-rays in Bangkok and at home in the USA and all the subsequent doctors gave big compliments to the surgeon. Also, the nursing care was really excellent and the hospital was very clean (moreso than many hospitals I've visited in much more developed places). They earned my respect.
