Downs And Ups

Can someone more technically minded than myself explain why the download is pretty good, whilst the upload is terrible please?

Very strange.

Normally there are seldom problems with upload speeds, and since download is good, I doubt there are phone line problems.

It wouldn't hurt though to try to get into your router and check the line quality.

Most routers give separate values for the upload and the download link.

What you'll have to look for is the actual connection speeds (in kbps), Line Attenuation (in dBm, should be 60 or less) and the Signal to Noise ratio Margin (SNR margin, should be over 12 dBm)

It sort of looks like a router problem, or a problem with the DSLAM (=modem at the other side of the phone line).

Thanks for the reply Monty.

I had a fiddle around in the router diagnostics and it seems the values you mentioned are as follows:

Noise margin upstream - 22db

Noise margin downstream - 17db

Attenuation upstream - 31db

Attenuation downstream - 51db

Upstream Speed - 512kbps

Downstream Speed - 2560kbps

I should also add that I noticed this download/upload difference several weeks ago, and monitoring it over that time I have seen the upload vary from low 20's to mid 300's

These values indicate that you have a good line.

The upload bandwidth, 512kbps, is normal.

The speedtest might have been low because of traffic congestion at your ISP. Another way to see what's actually going out (and coming in):

download a (popular) file with bittorrent and check the upload and download speeds.
