I am planning on driving down to Samui later part of next week. The route to Bangkok and around the ring road looks straight forward and then just keep heading south. Its the routes to the ferry ports I am unsure about. Which town and ferry crossing would be best?

Could you do it in one day too?, I am 250 km's north of Bangkok and I will be driving down in a newish pickup.

Looking at the distance involved on my Thai road map the sensible side of me says plan an overnight stop somewhere.

Can you purchase a return ticket at the ferry crossing port? I would think so as you can on the Koh Chang boats. I intend to only stay one night on Samui, pick up my stuff and return a day later, but you never know after visiting some of my old drinking patches on Bang Rak. :o

From Bangkok you follow signs for : Samut sakhorn, then Petchaburi, then hua hin, choumpon, surathani, and finaly koh samui. As said you will end up in donsak and if you are trying to do it in one day (stressful) i suggest you start very early. If you arrive later than 16:00 you might not get on the last ferry (19:00) without a booking. Good places to overnight is available in hua hin, pratchuap kiri khan, and choumpon. My personal oppinion is that its too long of a trip to do in one day but we are all different. Good luck! :o

u book ticket then pay with audya bank if u have one. or they have another alternative way of booking but u wil have to ask them.

the post above me gives good directions.

There is a similar thread running on the Issan Forum about driving down to Krabi that might have some interest for you.

The ferries are located at Donsak , near Surattani.
We did a run down to Samui last year, after driving through the night we got to Surattani at about 3am - found a drive-in short time hotel to catch a few hours sleep then pushed on to the ferry at about 10am, if I remember correctly, some 20 minutes drive away. Very straight forward - well signposted along good roads.

just did it, left at 4 am was on the 2 pm ferry to kpg, getting out of bangkok was the only stressful part of the journey.

return trip from kpg, 11 am ferry from thongsla, arrived home in bkk at 11:30 pm and had many breaks and a nice lunch in surat. again absolutely no stress.

go to google maps, click get directions and type bangkok to koh samui. it will give you VERY good and exact directions. if you have gps, you can actually see when you are off course

From Bangkok go from the outer circle expressway to Rama 2 Road until you get to the end then south on route 4 to Chumporn. At the intersection for Ranong go straight on the Asian Highway to Surat Thani. Once you past the Air Force base your turn on left going to Surat Thani, your continue on Route 41 pasting Tesco, continue on until you past Big C your turn right at that intersection. and follow the signs to the pier at Donsak. It's about 45 km from the Big C. The last ferry leaves about 6 pm. Recommend don't try it in one day very long and tiring trip.

Hi all and thanks for all useful tips I have read on driving to Samui.

I bought an old car last week, got my license a few days ago and drove down yesterday.

We left at 5 am on Sunday and arrived in the port at 2:30pm the same day (too late for the 3pm ferry). The driving was so so easy and the signposts more or less perfect. The only problem we had was getting out of bangkok which took a lot longer than it should have.

I found it really easy and would say, Yes its quite easy to do in a day, BUT you pass a lot of niece places which we will visit on the way back.

Happy driving
