I had a full basket of shopping and went to the counter where they added up and bagged everything and when I handed them my Platinum card they said they do not take them. I was a bit confused as there was no signs, so I haned them another platinum card I have thinking it was just the first card, and the same thing. I said I do not have any cash and the manager came over and just looked at the card and stood there for two minutes with a stupid grin on her face, she did not say a word.

I had no choice but to take my card and wonder over to tops instead. I will not be wasting my time with them again.

this was the foodland in Patpong. why would they not take my cards? anyone know? coz I couldnt work it out.

Quite simple actually, the CC companies charge 2-4% more to retailers for using Plat cards over Gold and Regular cards. I don't blame companies like foodland to stop taking them.

Alternatively, would you be happy if they passed the charge along to you, like so many air ticketing companies do?

Aside from snob appeal, what's the purpose of a Platinum card? Are there extra benefits like CDW/LDW when renting a car? I got rid of my Amex Gold Card when they changed the rules on the LDW/CDW waiver for non-us-resident cardholders. Couldn't see the point in an $80 USD fee for a US Dollar Card I never used (except to rent a car).

They dont take them in many places in Sydney too and I would never get one either

Don, u need to qualify for one mate :o but seriously here Amex / Thai Air keep sending me a pre-approval letter twice a year for one, but it only cost 20,000 baht year fees. Just still to my Gold at 3k a year. Can still use it at foodland too!

Not a problem to pay a couple of % extra, but dont you think they should have a sign saying so?

Snob appeal? maybe so. but I do not have a yearly fee for having/using it, so why not use one. but I do think shops should have a sign saying they dont except them or that there is a small sur charge.

I have platinum cards. They just upgraded me without even asking me if I wanted it. Great news that they can cost me more money, ha ha, or not even be accepted.

Maybe I should go for a gold card also then if more places except them. to be honest, I did not apply for one, I opened a bank account and they gave me one, no fees nothing, so why not use it. they are pretty handy for getting reserved parking at the bigger department stores.

Whats the big deal in having a platinum card? I dont see why people would think it is snobish. its just a credit card at the end of the day, and plenty of people have them.

some strange people on this board.

Nothing wrong with having a cc,most people have them.

But buying your food in a two bob outfit like foodland in a third world country with a platinum card is a bit daft to be fair.

must be a recent thing. The Thai Airways AMEX Platinum were doing bonus point deals with foodland last year and I was using my card there as much as I could.

Ah well. Luckily I have a bog standard visa for these times as well.

If you are getting too much grief for having a Platinum Card or you are gaining enough face with it, then I see StanChart is promoting a Titanium Card...not sure if you get discounts off golf clubs with it or not. :o

Not disputing you but are you sure that's true?

I know Amex charges the retailer more than, say, Visa, but I never knew there was a different charge depending on the "Status" of the Card.

this is news to me.....and until recently I consulted to one of the CC firms and also had to pay the charges via another retail client.

I think most likely somehow there has been a miscommunication.

VISA cards attract one range of charges. Mastercard another. Amex another and discovery/JCB yet again....another set of charges.

my guess is foodland is probably paying 1.35- 1.8% for ALL Visa card transactions; Amex probably something like 1.8 - 3%; I have not seen their volume so not sure.

There is no difference for the merchant between a Plat card or a gold card or a green card except that sometimes they want to try to attract wealthier customers who spend more so they might run a promotion just for plat and thus have to absorb a discount or whatever.

As for why have one (and I have one): no annual fee; free entry to airport lounges; better points scheme; higher limit; discounts on petrol/restuarants etc (far more than a std card); direct call centre line 24 hours with staff answering the phone within usually 20 sec or so.

Without any changes to my life, the Plat card effectively would allow me to take a trip abroad every 2nd year to somewhere decent; or get some Tumi bag or a fancy TV or some other pointless thing. Much as I don't care for credit cards in everyday life; 3% off my petrol bill sure helps and then there is a 25% discount at Fireplace Grill.

AMEX Plat has a non negotiable annual fee. That's why I don't have one. but most VISA Plat cards do not.

This is starting to sound like every why would anyone own a Zegna suit/BMW/Swan yacht/Swiss watch and why would they fly business class/first class/eat cavier/pay 100,000b a month rent/go to resort and wouldn't they catch a taxi/ride the bus/complain about double pricing/not pay a sin sot/choose from the fishbowl and not the sideline.

It is posted in the check-out line in the Pattaya Foodland.

There is a big poster sized sign concerning the Platinum Visa card taped to a door at Foodland Soi 5 in Bkk. The sign announces that platinum visa will no longer be accepted by Foodland as of a certain date (july1 I think).

I don't use my platinum visa here in Thailand (or any other credit cards) so I didn't pay much attention to the sign. It has been posted for at least one month but unfortunately the sign is posted on the back door entrance to the store which most people don't use.

I noticed this too at the foodland in Patpong. I went to the check out with about 2000 baht worth of groceries and they refused to take my card. They told me the fees are too high and showed me a sign taped up that said they no longer accept platinum cards. Fair enough, they can take whatever cards they want, and I can also choose to spend my money elsewhere. So I left my items at the checkout and they got to restock all of it, and got a cab to Villa in Suhkumvit. I will NEVER shop at foodland again.

Think it just shows us all that even though we may qualify for these cards - we may also REJECT the offer. Though as Britmaverisk pointed out they may offer "upgrade" you to something without you even asking for it. I'm sure I am not the only who keeps getting pestered by these guys on the phone
