Possibly the cheapest, but also the coolest part of Thailand. Shopping - no problem, you'll find some great bargains, especially among the handicrafte. Sunbathing is a middle-of-the-day activity in December!

Bearing in mind that Christmas is the high season, Chiang Mai is still not expensive. Hotels/guesthouses will be more difficult to get into but not all charge extra because of the high season. For sunbathing, get a hotel with a pool. Suggest Top North Hotel (very near Thapae Gate in the centre of town). They have a pool, satellite tv, etc, and only charge 600 baht a night. Also have bigger (800 baht) rooms.

Try the Night Bazaar to the east of the city centre for shopping, but, as always, make sure you smile and haggle. Plenty of huge department stores on the peripheral of the city also.
