When You Moved To Thailand, How Much Money Had You Saved?

Recommended Posts

Folks, i know this is a particular dodgy question but when you decided to make Thailand your full-time home, how much money did you have to do it??? I dont need the exact figure, just round it up :o

And, from thinking about making the leap to actually getting on the plane and doing it....how long???

No, i dont work for the Inland Revenue!!!!!! Just trying to work everything out and decide on timescales etc.

far far far too many variables imo.

How old are you? Will you plan to work? WIll you need to work? Do you have kids of schooling age? Are you planning on having a family anytime between now & when you die? Do you have a pension you can draw on? WIll you be supporting a spouse? Do you eat out a lot? party alot?

So many things that will affect the costs.

So give us some idea :o

Get ready for the i didnt move to LOS until i was a multi millionaire in pounds and anyone who does with less will get aids and die, and they are a scourge on Thai society.

Im 33 have a bit of cash (several million baht) and will work until im 42ish when i hope to have 500,000 GBP so i can live in LOS fulltime, in the meantime im looking to work offshore and will be qualified to get a decent job pretty soon on my time off i will live in LOS.

500,000GBP at 42 on the basis i will live for another 30 odd yrs is 15,000 GBP a year, more then enough to survive.

Your question is a legitimate one but it's unlikley that you'll get a useful answer because it's a "how long is a piece of string" type of question.

No one can answer your question here mate, people will just try and make negative comments. Research yourself somewhere else if i was u like thailand.

I'm not saying how much, but I've got the bases covered well enough with capital and continuing income.

Check out the retirement calculator at the link below - it's been posted before but the figure you need when you allow properly for inflation is usually way higher than most people think. It doesn't allow for continuing income after retirement - but it also doesn't factor in changes in exchange rates. It says dollars, but obviously you can use figures for whichever currency applies to you.

Yeah, i've got that feeling already. Anyway, it was worth a try. Simple questions to people always end up in questions being asked even when your just interested in others. Still, if anybody wants to answer, please be my guest!!!!!!

THE QUESTION WAS......

(from me ,to you, not about me!!!)

How much did you have when coming to Thailand??

How lond did it take from you deciding to getting out to Thailand??

The answer may be a lot different for people who come to Thailand for an early retirement than for those who come here to work to stay here for a short period of time. To retire, I wouldn't have the balls to come here with a lot less than what I thought that I'd need in Eurpope or the US. The reason? Because while Thailand is cheap now I'd be concerned that over the length of a long retirement that Thailand might become just as expensive as the West, in other words that inflation in Thailand may outpace the inflation in more developed countries. 30 years ago Singapore was very cheap and now it is flat-out expensive; 30 years from now Thailand might be as expensive as Singapore.

If you buy a two bedroom flat in London, and rent it out, you'll easily make that, and leave a nest egg, 4 or 5 times that, for your loved ones.

Win, win.

we havnt moved yet but are doing so next month, it took us probaably a year to decide for sure we were moving, as we had visited some family and just caught the bug so to speak, couldnt stop comparing thailand to the uk.

i will turn 24 in dec and will move with dan (other half) who is 25. we decided for sure we would move in May this year. It took us a week to get visas (which we got early this month), and the plane ticket is well instant.

we have thought about it carefully, and looked at all our options in the uk and for us, personaly, its not looking good staying here at the minute too expensive, jobs here in the north east are crappy (in my sector of career anyway) lifestyle is not great even though we work hard etc etc . dont get me wrong for some the UK is fine so each to their own. But we thought if we dont try and see the world now while we can then when can we, we have no children or mega ties so we are just going for it.

we have researched as much as we can on the net,and quizzed family who have emmigrated to thailand already, and have found TV a massive help ..but we know we will never know fully what its like to live their till next month :D

so i would advise reading and reading and asking lots!

as for how much we are taking, well i dont want to say how much exactly but if you look at our ages it aint gonna be a million !! .....pounds that is :o

I got made redundant so have a bit from that and with savings etc we will be fine for a while. But we dont have the intention of doing nothing, as said we have done our homework and have a plan in the pipeline for an income which we have started already.

When I came here ten years ago and stayed at a meditation temple I had approximately $4,000. Things have changed considerably! Follow your bliss and let money flow into your life freely and unencombered.

I dont need the exact figure, just round it up. $215,000 USD and haven't worked since.

And, from thinking about making the leap to actually getting on the plane and doing it....how long??? About three years.

When I read the title of this topic, my first response was "None of your business!" It is a dodgy question. I used to work for "Inland Revenue." :o

Anyway, I had retirement savings, two pensions, and a small inheritance when I decided to move here. After my very first trip to Asia, I ran home and sold the car, the motorcycle, canceled the lease, etc., and moved about four months after the trip.

Pieces of string vary in length.

It was a bit different for me, when I first decided that I wanted to settle in LOS I had a biz in the UK. I was 48 then.

I managed to sell it for a reasonable price so threfore I have enough to see me through, plus I kept a property in the UK which I rent out.

In the distant future I will also have pensions, my only concern would be if I ever got seriously ill then hospital charges could wipe me out if I was stuck in a hospital like Bumrungrad for example for say a year.

My Wife is insured, so no problems there, unfortunatley I do not always enjoy robust health and have had many problems in the past and am therefore un-insurable !!

But I am not saying how much my net worth is.

Hmmm. So will you marry me ?

The last time I married somebody, I made her pregnant nine times. I'll pass, thanks. Besides, I already have at least one Thai boyfriend. :o
