Live Abroad - Getting Married In Los

Recommended Posts

Me and tgf live in NZ and are getting married in LOS next year. Does anyone know the law for getting a marriage certificate. After getting married we will come back to NZ.

Do we need to register the marriage in NZ first?

Does anyone know the rules?

You will need a "permission to get married in foreign country" from NZ embassy in Bangkok.

This you must have translated and legalized at MFA (Ministry of foreign affairs).

The legalization alone took 3 hours.

Contact the NZ embassy.

She will only need id-card and house paper.

You will need the papers mentioned above plus the usual copy passport, visa etc etc.

Marriage can be done at any Amphur.

I'm going to the Amphur to get my certificate on Friday 2008-08-08 :o

Good luck.

Thankyou. GF says we can get a marriage certificate in NZ and take it to amphur in LOS and they will happily give the thai marriage cert. Is this the case? Sounds too easy. Your 3 hour wait at the MFA sounds more like Thailand.

I need to make sure it's legal in LOS because our daughter is thai.

Congrats on your wedding!!

You will need to translate your NZ certificate to Thai and legalized any way.

Amphur don't like foreign papers without MFA stamp. :o

The translation service I used, offered me to take if to MFA to get legalized for a fee.

Good. I thought I was going to miss out on my three hours at the MFA :o . Thanks PoorSucker. You have resolved my dilemma.

Have a good marriage - 080808 - it's gotta be lucky if billions of chinese are banking on it :D

if you get legally married in thailand at a district office then you'll get a thai marriage certificate and your marriage will be registered in Thailand.

instructions :

http://nzembassy.com/info.cfm?CFID=1518057...=nz&p=60528

if you ALSO wish to get a NZL marriage certificate and have your marriage registered in NZL then your marriage ceremony in Thailand will need to be witnessed by an authorized official from the New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok. There will be a callout fee for the officials time.

THIS IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN GET A THAI AND NZL MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE.

Are you sure? A callout fee to Kho Pha Gnan a week before Songkran is probably gonna be a pretty steep fee. Can we just get married in both countries - marriage cert at amphur in thailand and a civil ceremony in NZ?

These links sound pretty complicated just to get married! Any idea why they make it so tricky?

You might have an issue getting a consular officer to travel to Ko phagnan.....you should choose a district office in bangkok close to the embassy, convenient for all and cheaper for the officer's call out fee (they charge by time).

The Bangrak district office is convenient :

5 Nares Road, Kwang Siphraya,

Bangkok 10500

I'd book the consular officer well in advance too(1 month).

BTW: there is absolutely no advantage to having a thai vs nzl vs thai and nzl certificate/registration. i only did the 2 registrations because the consular officer was a personal friend and already present at my ceremony as a guest :o

We have a 40 strong party coming for the wedding. 40 X 6 = lots of kiwi beer! I'm looking forward to the local LOS stuff myself. The singha and chang they sell here is export quality - read - not the real stuff - alcohol content is far too controlled :o

I know, my GF wanted to go on Thursday but I said it would be better on Friday.

Normally my GF is more superstitious than me. :o

I feel lucky that I hold a passport from a country that not requires any official witnesses.

The problem I had was to get the proper papers from national registration.

The bureaucrats on the embassy and the registrar had different opinions on what paper I needed from Finland.

Made one trip to BKK for nothing.

Not detracting from OPs post but I dont suppose you're from the UK?

Does the UK work a similar system to NZ with respect to witnesses coming? Too late for that now though but I'll have a civil ceremony in the UK if I have to.
