IMHO Thunderbird is much much... better than outlook express but it always depends on somebody's needs.

Use the server settings you have configured in your outlook express

It all depends on what E Mail you are using.

Indeed Thunderbird is better than Outlook Express.

You should be able to get the settings from your email provider.

Eksample:

SMTP: smtp.mailserver.com

IMAP: imap.mailserver.com

If you use a mailserver outside your ISPs domain you might want to look into alternate SMTP ports, cause they will most likely block port 25 to anything else than their own mail server. Commonly used is port 587.

I used outlook express to access my hotmail and gmail emails.

I received recently a message from Microsoft explaining that I wouldn't be able to access my hotmail emails from outlook express and that I had to upgrade to Windows Live Mail.

I tried and got lots of problems.

So, I tried Thunderbird and everything works fine now. It is at least as good as OE.

If you need help, about incoming and outgoing server settings, you should indicate which type of email account you would like to use.

I tried T'bird after M$ said they would no longer let Outlook Express work with Hotmail, but then they backed down so I stayed with OE. The main reason I tried it was because M$'s alternative to OE, Windows Live Mail, is IMHO a pile of doggy-doos.

I got T'bird to work perfectly with all my Hotmail and Gmail accounts, but have stayed with OE for now.

I'm not too sure on the technical aspects, but I do recall an excellent episode of Blue Peter where they showed you how to make your own Tracey Island, which I am sure would help you set up your Thunderbirds.

I am sure you will find it on YouTube if you search hard enough.

I just remembered! You need to download and install (as "add-ons" - extensions - in Thunderbird) "Webmail v. 1.3.2" and "Webmail - Hotmail v. 1.2.15". They are what I have installed. Read about them here: http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html

The Webmail extension must be installed first and Thunderbird restarted. Then install Webmail-Hotmail extension.

I don't think there are easy terms. Now that Firefox 3 is out and "stable" , maybe Mozilla will put more resources into Thunderbird to make it as easy to use as Firefox. But for the time being, it's a fairly "geeky" product.

I have it working for Hotmail and AIM (same settings) and GMail (it gets its own plug-in)...but not Yahoo.

Try using G MAIL it is much better and has POP3.

As for Yahoo, if you do not have a pop3 account but use Yahoo webmail then you can use Ypops!

Do you currently use Outlook Express to download your Hotmail emails? I ask because you mentioned it in your first post. If you do use Outlook Express, then your Hotmail account is - like mine are - very old and still allows access from OE and Outlook. People who sign up for Hotmail accounts now have to pay for such access.

So if you can use Outlook Express to access Hotmail, you can use Thunderbird.
