Due for release: The shamed glam-rocker says he won't come back to the UK

Paedophile former pop star Gary Glitter had no visits or letters from friends or family during his time in a Vietnamese jail.

The 64-year-old is due to be released in two days’ time having served three years for sex offences against children.

The glam rocker would have been freed more than a year ago but nine British charities wrote to the Vietnamese authorities and demanded he serve his full sentence, said his lawyer Le Thanh Kinh.

He added: ‘I was shocked that so many people in England objected. In all the time he has been in prison he has never had a visit from anyone in his family or any letters.’

Mr Kinh said Glitter – real name Paul Gadd – will be escorted by police to a flight out of Saigon on Tuesday.

Under Vietnamese law, deportees must be sent back to their country of birth and Glitter is booked on a flight to London.

But no one will accompany Glitter on the plane and there are indications he will not re-board when it makes a stop-over, most probably in Bangkok.

Mr Kinh said: ‘The Vietnamese are deporting Gary but after that he is a free man. If he wants to get off in Bangkok, that is up to him. He does not have to go back to England. Gary has told me he does not want to go back to England. Whether he will or not, I don’t know. He would like to live in Singapore or Hong Kong.’

He added Glitter, now suffering a heart condition, ‘is a sick old man’ and might return to the UK for the healthcare.

Glitter – said to still earn around £150,000 a year in royalties – left Britain after four months in jail in 1999 from having child porn on his computer.

A Scotland Yard source said if Glitter flies back to Heathrow he will be met by police. He will have to declare where he will live for the sex offenders’ register.
