I am looking to buy a second hand V8 engine and gearbox. Does anybody know of a car recycler(wrecker) that might have one out of a wrecked Landrover Discovery or whatever.

Buy a Lexus V8 (1UZ or 2UZ). Economical and a lot more power than the old 3.9 liter Landi engine. Lexus Engines are plenty arround and easy for parts. If you separate the exhoust pipes and put only one muffler on each side at the end of the tail pipe you get a really nice deep V8 sound, li8ke a Chevy. I put a lexusengine in my former Range Rover, tothether Automatic Transmission and with Lancruiser 4 x4 unit. It works perfectly since years.

I put a lexus VVTI (2J) in my land rover discovery with LPG a few years ago, and haven't look back since. I want to put a prado engine in our Toyota Sport Rider and convert to LPG; BUT ENGINES ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN AT THE MOMENT. Could you let me know where you got the Lexus engine?

Don't forget that when you do the conversion that you should keep your discovery transfer case which is full time 4 wheel drive. Get a readily available adapter plate between your Auto box and the Transfer case.

If you put in a Toyota tranfer case you lose a number of advantages especially full time 4x4.

Also when you select the UZ to install, be careful as the there is only one UZ model with the oil filter in the right location so you don't have to cut the chassis!

I personally prefer the 3.1 Isuzu diesel conversion for the discover. Slots in so perfecty to the old V8 ZF box and gearing is perfect.

I would recommend the 1UZ as well. We have just installed a supercharged one in BMW 3 Series and also in a Nissan Cefiro. There are plenty of them around, but if you are not planning on upgrading the internals then you are going to be taking your chances on reliability.
