Caretaker cabinet agrees on Somchai Wongsawat as caretaker PM

BANGKOK, Sept 10 (TNA) - The caretaker cabinet meeting on Wednesday evening agreed to have Somchai Wongsawat as caretaker prime minister following the Constitution Court on Tuesday stripped Samak Sundaravej of his post after finding him guilty of violating the charter by receiving payment to host TV cooking shows while in office.

The lifting of the emergency decree in place in Bangkok last week or the nomination of the next prime minister were not discussed. However, the coalition parties reiterated they would stay together to form the new government and would submit the name of a new prime minister to the House of Representatives this Friday.

Earlier, PPP secretary-general Surapong Suebwonglee said his party was open to opinions from academics, businessmen and other sectors so the nomination of a new prime minister by the current caretaker administration would be accepted by society.

He said former prime minister and PPP leader Samak Sundaravej was being considered as one of the premiership candidates along with other key party leaders.

Talks were held early Wednesday between key leaders of the PPP with Ban-harn Silapa-Archa, leader of the Chart Thai Party, one of the partners in the coalition government.

“There are a lot of suitable candidates from the PPP. I think we can find someone who is able to compromise. But I won’t get involved in proposing anyone. It’s up to the PPP,” said Mr. Banharn.

Other coalition parties also echoed the same stance in support of the PPP as core leader in forming a new administration.

Mr. Surapong said discussions would be held with PPP members on Thursday to finalise who would be nominated as the new government leader.

Meanwhile, the anti-government People’s Alliance for Democracy, which occupying the Government House compound since Aug. 26 to demand Samak's resignation, announced it could not stand the idea of Samak being renominated as prime minister.

BANGKOK, Sept 10 (TNA) -

Ok great, but it is not like the problems are solved. Or are they? When are there going to be new elections to determine a new representative government?

But correct me if i am wrong but don't PAD want to get of ALL Thaksin's cronies ???? :o

Surely having his brother in law in this position isn't going to solve anything is it ??

I dunno i give up trying to figure it all out any more - its now becoming boring....................

Is Somchai Wong the brother in law of Taksin? (Getting mixed up with names) If so it's doom :o

From the Bangkok Post:

......"Mr Somchai, who is also acting education minister, is the brother-in-law of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra.".......

There you go. Pathetic wouldn't even start to describe it!!

Yes, but didn't Sonthi L. recommend Somchai Wongsawat to replace Samak, this was reported not 10 days ago. He also said they would stand down the PAD protest Somchai was appointed to replace Samak.

It's all about business, it's all about a meglomaniac with LMS (little man's syndrome). This is NOT PAD the moral, ethical force for democratic change, it's about sell the Manager products.

If a PM can not be a cooking show host, then why should anyone accept the Leader of PAD to be a hard core business man. There is something now quite right here!

They really do know how to out-do themselves on a minute-by-minute basis.

You can laugh, but if this kind of lunacy had occurred in Australia I assure you that Parliament House would not only have been occupied by angry members of the public, it quite probably would have been burned down. With the politicians inside.

Democracy is not a simple matter of voting. It's also about strong governance (system to limit the power of elected officials) and increasingly I think it is also somewhat a cultural value.

It's sad that Thai members have to make jokes when outsiders point out how ludicrous the current situation appears to the outside world. Irrespective of other countries' supposedly enlightened governments, it is tragic that Thais have yet to experience real democracy. When they do we can all laugh together!
