I grew up with the notion that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. people get flamed on here when they ask a legal question so they dont break the law. why is that a problem and why all the moral judgments. if they were asking to break the law ok, but they are asking what the law is so they dont break it. this is up to Thailand to decide what laws are right and wrong and bringing western morals or ideas is plain wrong. I don't see a problem with asking this such as

what is the legal age to have sex? [we meet girls all the time and this is valid]

what is the speed limit? [doesnt mean i want to speed but to know what is legal : )]

can I own a gun? [might want one to protect my home]

can I make border runs and stay in the country longer? [many people have this problem and where do they find out the proper path]

what happens if I have an overstay? [sometimes it happens and asking the law is valid]

why cant I buy alcohol between 2 and 5? [doesn't mean they are a drunk

what is the deal, someone asks a legitimate question so he doesn't break the law and he gets slammed. i would think this is why we have this forum. one of the last posts asked the legal age for sex and all of a sudden this poor guy is a pervert, he is asking so he will not have a problem.

I hate to clue you in but in America it is 18 in some states and younger in others, i know in many European countries it is much younger, if you don't like that tell the respective government to change the law to fit in with your moral standards or move, not the guy who is trying to follow law whereever he may be. i don't drink very much alcohol but i sure don't slam the guy who asks what are the drinking hours nor do I call him an alcoholic [whether or not he may be]

sorry for the rant but grow up guys and live and let live, we all do something someone else doesn't like, that's why there are laws so we all stay with some sort of code.

How dare you ask such questions. We are so smart and so used to dealing with only the most complex issues facing the country and world, that when you ask these mundane questions you distract us from our true calling!

Everyone on Earth should know the answer to these questions and everyone should do a search, google it and cite their sources whenever they post anything!

(and yes I am being facetious). People should feel free to post what they want and get the courtesy of a simple answer. Guess we don't live in a perfect world.

Best of luck to you.

i still do not understand this 2 - 5 lark... all it means is at 1.55 you stock up on beer for the next 3 hours or go to a bar !! :o

This isn't aimed at you as an adult - it's supposed to stop the schoolkids buying booze on the way home. Of course, if Somchai Junior has enough to buy 10 litres then 'no promblem!' You'll find that the Mom & Pop shops rarely observe this restriction anyway, just the 7/11s and the supermarkets.

If you come from America, the legal age of consent is 18. This is an international law that the United States is signed onto.

That may be, but I think there are still a few states that allow age of consent below the age of 18. However, that usually takes into account that both parties are under 18. It doesn't mean a guy who's 45 can go out and have sex with a 15 or 16-year-old girl, which would be a sex crime (statutory rape and contributing to the deliquency of a minor).

In Scotland you can marry and have sex at 16 years of age. :o

Does this still stand if the country you are in have differing laws and have not signed up to an international law?

As for the OP, yes it can be a little grating sometimes, but this General Troll Central and I am afraid it is something that has to be put up with, you get to know the posters after a while and skipping their posts can be quite an art form, because sometimes you miss, then read and all of a sudden you are sucked in and 'bang' you are in the middle of a firefight, can be fun on occasion. :o

I don't understand why people asking sensible questions get flamed. Especially if it was already discussed on thread #8736 on 7th July 2001..."why didn't you do a search?!??!!!"

Not everyone understands the search at first, and just maybe there are plenty of new members that would find the topic interesting this year. Those bored by it needn't respond.

You're right about that. I still have a hard time pin-pointing a search, although the "Tag Cloud" seems to be helpful (though not exhaustive) with leading to general subjects based on certain keywords. But instead of the questions asking why a search wasn't done, seems to me posting a link if possible would be more helpful.

this thread really wasn't about the age of consent but about getting flamed for asking reasonable questions. but in answer to your response i googled consent and got this. age of consent around the world, not sure how updated it is but you can see how much it varies in each country. US has wide variations and thailand says 18. this is why it is one of the valid questions as to the law of the country you are in, in this case Thailand. doesn't make you a bad person to understand and want to follow the law
