What are people's impressions of this phone? Are these available in Bangkok yet? I am looking for a phone because my iPhone as great as it is has some weaknesses that I can't live with.

Signal strength is the first issue, how is the strength on HTC phones? Anybody use HTC phones with a Mac before? Is the Software package they give you compatible with Macs? Do they charge when you hook them to a laptop with a cable? A Nokia I had before wouldn't charge when hooked to my blackbook and the pc suite they included is windows only. This is sort of important as the area I am going has no power except a few hours at night.

Do the new models with the larger touch displays browse the web satisfactorily?

I don't really care how it compares to an iPhone, I have had a few of those and know their strengths and weaknesses. So to the people that are going to say "Get an iPhone." Thanks I have one.

The Touch HD hasn't been released anywhere.

cant understand why its only got 512mb internal storage compared to Iphone/omnia 8-16GB

wouldnt it be a pita to carry around a little memory card or losing/misplacing it.

http://www.htc.com/www/product.aspx?id=64796

Yes. It would be and if I didn't have a seperate iPod I wouldn't consider one. Does seem odd that other phones in their product line have much more storage but this one only has 512. I guess some people haven't gotten past the limited storage out of the box but I can carry 10,000,000 add on chips with me mind set. I think Apple got it right in this respect. As nice as an expansion slot on the iphone would have been it is still more memory out of the box than any phone at the time of it's launch had. I hope this becomes standard across the board.

On the other hand maybe they couldn't have fit so many other feature sets into it if they had included a bigger memory stick. The phone is a pretty big brick as it is, it looks to be about twice as thick as an iPhone from what I can tell. Perhaps it would have upped the price point. Who knows why they made this compromise but I am sure they had some reasoning, at least I would hope so.

Thanks to MMR for the link. I am not typically obsessed with mobiles but if I spend this much on one I don't want to get stuck with a piece of crap.

I'm still a newb when it comes to smartphones so my concerns about the HD's lack of internal memory may be unfounded.

Apparently quite large micro sd cards are available and I presume these just slot inside the phone so perhaps this option is better/more versatile than large internal memory without a slot ?, ignoring the extra cost for the card

Question is would internal memory react faster than memory retrieved from a the sd card, or, no difference ?

As for size, weight, here's some comparisons

HTC HD 115 x 62.8 x 12 146.4gms 3.8" 480 x 800 display

Iphone 3G 115 x 62 x 11.5 133grms 3.5" 480 x 320

Omnia 112 x 56.9 x 12.5 122grms 3.2" 240 x 400

I guess if you can handle carrying around an Iphone , and given its popularity a lot of people can, then HTC HD is the ultimate choice if you want WM and in my case WM office.

Otherwise, for pocketability, the Omnia would be my next choice.

Guess I'll have to weigh it up, literally, when the HD hits the stores later this year.

Btw, does anyone on this thread trade for a living. My main motivation for the big display smartphone is having the option of ultra portable trading as I prefer not to carry around a notebook. I need a decent size display so I can easily view webpages, and I need to access/edit my excel files and view pdf files

Prior to the HD, I tend to think there wasn't a pocketfriendly WM smartphone with a big enough screen for my use ?

Since you can get 16 GB memory cards, the low internal memory on the HD should not be a problem.

Also there is the Sony Xperia X1 which is said to be available in Thailand in about a months time, it has the same screen resolution as the HD and also a slide out keyboard.

You might have a look at Omnia which has a generous internal memory (2 versions 8GB and 16GB) and also have a memory card slot if you need more.

I do have an Omnia myself, which i am fairly satisfied with, i especially like the compact size and that it basically have it all inc. a 5MP camera with flash.

Yeah, the Omnia was my 1st choice and I was just waiting for a legit seller with warranty to offer them in Cambodia or I'd pick one up on my next visit to Thailand.

However, reading the specs on the HD, it seems to beat the Omnia in every area except pocketability.

What negatives, if any, have you found with the Omnia ?

Nothing major really, have added some programs to improve the looks and functions and use the latest Hi1 Rom and it works great in all respects.

My 2 cents

I got the HTC TyTN II I like it a lot (need to do firmware update to WM6.1 just to lazy to do so yet)

Came with a 1GB SD micro card in the box, bought a 4GB stick to put in it. and I'm probably never going to fill it all up because I use my iPod for music/video/podcasts

I wanted it because i wanted a qwerty keyboard, and more connectivity options than you can shake a stick at.

Maybe take a look at the HTC Pro for something available now, or go with the samsung. Played with a friends, it's got a beautiful screen and the samsung modified interface is pretty slick.
