Chatters 'display genitals'

Among more than 15,000 unregistered Internet cafes and computergame shops, many of them, which are popular among gay male clients, allow chatters to openly show off their genitals through webcams, a Bangkok seminar on child welfare was told yesterday.

These shops are located mostly opposite Ramkhamhaeng University and law enforcement officials could not effectively tackle such explicit exposure in public places, said Amornwit Nakhonthab, director of the Ramjitti Institute who was quoting a Child Watch report. He did not say why laws could not be effectively enforced in these cafes and shops.

There are around 5,000 shops and cafes registered with authorities, but their services for minors after 10 pm or customers in school uniforms were regularly reported. Game addiction and school absenteeism are increasing in Bangkok and major provinces across the country, the Child Watch report said.

He said more youths were being sent to correctional homes each year, from 30,000 a year previously to around 40,000 in the past two years. The report found that 30 per cent of students at lower high school levels in the provinces did not live with their parents. Vice and nightentertainment venues are being found operating near schools without sanction by authorities.

Assoc Prof Somphong Jitradab, a Chulalongkorn University lecturer on child development, said Child Watch also found that students were increasingly bored with schools and turning to computer games and seeking friends of the opposite sex, because school courses were boring and outdated. In many provinces where surveys were conducted, half the primary school students and 80 per cent of secondary students had mobile phones.

Obviously the problem are all those gay male teenagers in school uniforms whose display of genitals is the sure first step of a criminal career and later need to be sent to a correctional facility. If they would have kept their balls in their pants they would have become upstanding citizens.

Poor education, drug use and other factors are absolutely minor compared to this outrage, so let's have another crackdown to rid this country of criminal activity right now!

In my post above I tried to persiflage the connection that the article assumes between flashing gays (and supposedly only gay teenagers going to school using internet shops) and the increasing rate of current inmates.

As TAWP points out quite correctly the article does not conclude this to be only male gay pupils; it might be lesbians as well...

I would really like to see the statistics and research this article is based on :-)

I think this is just another example of MISINFORMATION by people

I have always found the ordinary Thai people to be very modest.

The people behind this report probably do have an agenda, but there are also a heck of alot of Thai men displaying their bare wares on the internet at cafes, you have to know where to look for this, most of the sites are Thais for Thais. Perhaps Thai men aren't as modest as some think.

As reported, the text is not clear that the clients in the internet cafe are exposing themselves, or watching webcam images of people at home using webcams. The text is jumbled. Thais are not great at connecting cause and effect. It may be all caused by ghosts in the machine.

I believe we are talking about a rather specific group of 'schoolkids' as quoted in the article here (and I confess I am rather not interested).

Agreed. Especially true of new American films. I started watching something the other day and there was so much gratuitous violence I had to give it up. That plus the fact that the script writers seem to feel obliged to throw ' motherfuc_ker ' into every other sentance makes it very tedious for an adult but magnetic to teenagers. It seems to give out the impression that its o.k. to kill someone as long as they can't see your private parts. Besides, the net is awash with porn so surely this is a greater threat.
