I'd guess all bars, pubs etc will be shut from 6.00pm Saturday until midnight on Sunday.

Assume you can still buy booze in restaurants or shops (for home consumption)

Anyone know for sure?

Seem to remember you couldnt buy booze in the likes of Big C last year they had the alcohol dept roped off.

Usually bars and pubs can stay open but receive a friendly request for co operation by not serving any alcohol. By no means you have to follow such a request, there only might be subsequently some more controls. :o

Nearly lost my face a year or two ago, when my friends saw me sipping some coke. Cynical "You too?", until they as well were denied a beer.

Is it actually Law to close, or is it just a respect thing?

Just curious

Bars are closed on Buddhist holidays as a mark of respect. It's not officially required by law. Where I'm based (in the south) the landlords usually ask the local mayor if he has any objection to them opening. This is a courteous gesture made to maintain good relations. They don't need his permission.

Given the reverance Thais show to their monarch I would be surprised if this applies to the King's birthday. I suspect everywhere except restaurants will be closed.

The only time I'm aware it's required, by law, for bars to close, is during national or provincial elections.

I've run a bar here and during my first year my 40th birthday was on 12th Aug. I was arranging a big party with loads of free food, when someone who'd been here longer than me pointed out that it was The Queen's birthday as well. He looked at his books from the previous year and said his place closed.

Just as we were opening at 3pm on the 12th, the police turned up with a request not to open. We didn't out of respect and the party went ahead OK on the 13th.

Also, in the first year over here, elections were called on 24/25th Dec - provincial, I'm sure. This time, there were definitely instructions to close. We opened at about 9pm on the 24th and had 70-80 customers in the bar almost immediately. We made it through to midnight, when the police turned up and explained that the ex could be arrested and a heavy fine imposed. They understood that all the customers were Western and that it was Xmas Eve, but the law was the law and we were luckily given 15 mins or so to clear everyone out. Decent of the police. I don't think it would be like that now.

I always closed for these occasions. Gave me and the staff a holiday. Just as pleasant to go to friend's house and celebrate there.

Went into town yesterday afternoon to check out who was open. Majority of normally frequented bars were closed whilst a few were open but only serving food and soft drinks. We went into the snooker hall (part of a hotel) and were served beer as normal, no questions asked. Apparently, some of the 'Chinese' night life was due to open at midnight but by that time I was tucked up in bed.
