Not sure what "study tourism" means? Date tourists? :)

But yes the ED visa is issued for many schools other than language - but that fall under the Ministry of Education. I believe there are college level courses in hotel management and such.

Hmmmm, dating foreign tourists would certainly not be high on my priority list!

Yes, I should have been clearer....studying "Tourism/Hospitality Management", that sort of thing

Thanks for all the good replies. And I don't need to work - this is a serious study ambition.

I want to go to Phuket w my family for 1 year. I am really keen to learn Thai and I want to enroll on a Thai language course for a year. If I get a Ed Visa will my husband and my two children (they have left school) get a 1 year non immigrant visa to stay with me? We are trying to work out the best way for all of us to stay in Phuket for a year and as I would learn Thai anyway we thought this would be the easiest thing for us to do.

The answer is unfortunately not. If your kids are under 14 then they will not have a problem staying here and will be able to just make an overstay as children do not pay for overstay but if they are over 14 (but could be 16) I will check it, then they will need a different kind of visa, they can also get an ED visa. As regards your husband this is not possible at this time for him to stay based on your ED visa, he will need a different kind of visa or also an ED visa.

Hope this helps

Hi, Walen School

As of January 1, 2010 - are there any fundamental changes in the ED Visa rules?

i.e. who can qualify?

length of stay?

renewals?

I do not know of any changes. If there are any changes we will keep everyone informed. For now things are like they were.

Does anybody know whether the embassy in Vientiane will issue an ED visa?

Just to clarify;

Do I need to have a Non-O already? - which implies having to go back to UK anyway

Posted

Vientiane will issue with correct papers from school. Will be single entry visa only, but can later obtain extensions of stay at Thai immigration (90 day periods at a time if studying at language school, or 12 months if studying at approved government school). No need to go back to the UK.

Hi,

Complete newbie here, so please treat this question with patience : if i get a single-entry ED Visa and need to move in and out of Thailand, will i be able to do this by obtaining re-entry permits ? Is that easy to get ? Thanks in advance.

Posted

A re-entry permit will preserve your current permission to stay on re-entry, ie, you would be stamped back in with the same permission to stay date you had before leaving. 1,000 baht single entry or 3,800 baht multi entry. Obtain from local immigration office. Need to take with you passport, completed application form TM8, recent passport sized photo, fee and copies of passport pages (photo page/visa page/entry stamp) and TM6 departure card. If studying at language school normal process is to obtain new extension of stay every 90 days from Thai immigration with supporting papers from the school. Can obtain new re-entry permit for each extension at that time if planning to travel.

A visa entry is only 90 days maximum so you could use a re-entry permit to leave and return during that original 90 day period only.

Thanks for your replies.

So what i've understood so far is that if i had a single-entry ED visa that wouldn't stop me from making trips in and out of Thailand as all i would need to do is get re-entry permits each time i wanted to travel. Is getting a re-entry permit straightforward ? Are there cases where it is refused ? What i'm asking is : is this re-entry permit thingie just a formality that one needs to do or will i be stressing out over the outcome each time ?

Ok, so as I understand, kids can just overstay and not face any fines or penalties? (mine are 2 and 4). But, in my case with regards to my wife, what type of visa could/should she get? I would be studying at Mahidol in a masters program for 1 year.

A Re Entry Permit is a formality. 1,000Baht for a single. 3,800 Baht for a Multi.

As said it would only keep your stay alive , it does not add days.

Children will not be fined but will be stamped as overstay. If you have a one year extension of stay wife can obtain matching extension of stay after obtaining a non immigrant visa entry. If you are just using 90 day visa entries she would have no status for any visa entry.

Immigration Order 777/2551 section 2.11

(1) The alien has obtained a temporary visa (NON-IM);

(2) Proof of family relationship; and (3) In the case of spouse, the marital relationship shall be de jure (legitimate) and de facto;

Good to know! Just Googled the Immigration Order you listed and saw the whole doc. Very helpful! Thanks! Nice to know the kids and wife all get the same as me.

I have seen postings (re: ED visa) that refer to 90 day Extension of Stay when they mean 90 day 'Receipt of Notification' (re: address change) which is not an Extension. I also see suggestions that the 90 day Notification requires a payment of 1900 baht. To my knowledge no payment is required for this notification .Can you clarify this point ? I suspect I may let the cat out of the bag so to speak.

Posted

ED visa for language study is normally only single entry for 90 days. Thereafter you extend your stay for 90 days using school paperwork and normal tm.7 with 1,900 baht fee. After the first extension a TM.47 address would also be required for each extensions of stay if you do not travel.

And the ED visa does not allow you to apply for a work permit!
is this still true?

Yes, on an Ed-visa entry no work permit is issued.
