An acquaintance in Bangkok's Special Remand Prison - held there for the last 8 months pending his appeal - to be heard possibly in December - has written to the effect that "foriegn" prisoners are no longer permited to receive gift parcels.

I can confirm that a EMS parcel containing only basic toiletaries and a paperback which I sent to him via the prison authority has just been returned to me unopened with a scribble in Thai  saying that the prisoner had refused the parcel - This is false and incorrect .

I do know why the prison authorities have introduced this ruling'

which if correct is a denial of basic rights and is patently racist.

Does anyone have more info ? - I am over 1000 kms from Bangkok.
