I've been looking at sport bikes for the last month and came across a 2001 Yamaha R1 for 145,000 baht. Is that within the realm of possibility or could it be a stolen bike. I found it on a Thai classifieds website.

edit: deleted the link cause if this is a good deal then I don't want someone to snatch it away from me. I want it but I'm skeptical. Wondering if there is any way to verify it's validity???

edit2: uploaded the picture.

There was one in Pattaya recently changed hands for 120k, no book,.people seem to be more worried about no papers now and the price seems to be coming down,.

what would it cost to get a book on it. i would want it for street use in bangkok.

about 60-80 thou IF you have the correct invoice's, contacts etc. if no plate and green book stay away unless you can afford to lose the money. customs can and will seize it if you are caught.

rumour is that the Kawa er6 will be available next year brand new with warranty, legal plate etc for under 300thou.

Also an R1 for street use in Bangkok, are you mad. I know someone that uses a XJR1300 in BKK but he is MADD so no problem :o

was looking at CBR400's and stumbled across this. A bargain is hard to pass up, but I am skeptical on this one, all other R1's are going for twice this. I think I'll keep looking at CBR's. Perhaps a VFR even. Would eventually like to get a 1000cc when my budget agrees with me. For now I'll have to be a bit more sensible. Unfortunately because I am a bit mad.

hard to say for sure but chances are it was previously a rental bike in pattaya or somewhere else. if that's the case stay away, they get the shit knocked out of them. also, if it doesn't include any "proper" import docs or invoices then getting a green book is impossible.

have a good test ride before making any decisions at all. don't know what your level of bike knowledge is like but if you're not too knowledgeable then take along someone who is. a bike like an R1 needs to be in great condition considering the speeds you can hit.

personally i wouldn't touch it. bottom line is it's priced at about 1/3 to 1/4 of what a 2001 is worth....and there's usually a reason why it's priced so cheaply.

as the saying goes..."if somethings too god to be true, it probably is"

PS. an R1 is fine in the city. i've been riding mine in bangkok for over 2 years now. granted it's not as versatile as a sonic but i have no problems getting around and weaving through traffic. love it!

Clearly has been an accident as parts are visually missing.Has been repainted as stickers are missing. And that's only what the picture reveals surprise can get much bigger when you see it.

HEY... whats wrong with riding a 1300cc in BKK?

My memory is a tad hazy now, but believe the R1 didn't have a black frame until the '02 model. Looks like the earlier model frame which has been painted. The swingarm and subframe have obviously been re-painted, badly. The tank, bodywork and clutch cover are all newly painted. Wouldn't touch it without a long and careful check

with regards to driving a 1000cc or bigger in Bangkok. i think its ALOT safer to drive a bigger bike as opposed to say a honda dream in BKK. my bike is in the shop at the moment (i have clocked up 6000km in 3 weeks ..service ect) and im on the honda dream. no car has any respect for smaller bikes and seem to pull into my lane at will, the tires are so thin its dangerous, i have no power should i need it to get away from danger, forget about having a pillion and not popping the tires and finally.. its embarrassing!

if you want a race bike and are going to change out the fairing ,strip it down and rebuild it THEN its a bargain. as long as its all there and then i would still bid him down.

BUT it does look like it has a plate (bet its a false plate) i remember i was going to buy a bike from a local shop it had a plate, i agreed a price then went in later to check it and a guy was taking off the plate, so i ask whats happening and get told that this is the owner and the plate is false so he taking it back but he said dont worry he's a police man and the police sticker on the bike will mean no problems.......what the <deleted>. i did NOT buy this bike

Bike pictured does have a plate, tho if thats just tacked on with no green book who knows..

Yes its cheap, but saying that its 1/4 the price a good one should be ?? 580k for a 2001 R1 !!! Thats not the pricing I see.

As someone states theres a green book legal one for only 30k more (ok so its a 99) right on this site, prices on the english language sites seem to be a bit higher than the Thai ones. Sure its cheap, it looks like its a bit of a rough old nail so maybe thats fitting.

It's not so much the money but the safety of the thing I'd be more concerned about. Something that fast, which may have been in a crash, may have been shoddily thrown together from bits . . . YIKES!!!

I'd avoid like plague.

We are talking nearly £3k (three thousand pounds) as well. Lot of money these days.

if the guy would turn his phone on that would be good! got a friend trying to call the number for the R1 all morning

hey dude, his phone is off because he's as dodgy as they come. this guy owes quite a few people registration books and documents from his previous shop. DODGY DODGY DODGY! i speak from personal experience. he stiffed me on the green book for a zx600rr i bought from him years ago. famous for selling bikes that were held together with spit and chewing gum. BTW i'm refering to the 1 being sold for 185k, not the 1st link posted :-)

anyway...to answer the original question of this post "is it stolen. is it too cheap". from what i know about this prick you can count on it being stolen or a total piece of sh@t or it belongs to someone else and he's trying to flog it. a warning to everyone on this forum if you see his name pop up on anything to do with bike purchases....avoid it! this is 1st hand knowledge, no rumors or innuendo...a dodgy prick plain and simple. and finally i have new contact details for him :o

Many, many . . . in fact a thousand thank-you's and I owe you a beer.

I was considering buying a 2003 XJR1300 from 'Frank' for 195,000 Baht. He also had a 2001 CBR929 up for 215,000 Baht. One ad shows it having 8,900kms another 14,000kms. This triggered a little suspicion.

Oh, regarding the bike thing, if you ever want to know what I look like just look for any farang driving a D-Max. I've given up with it, the value for money is so, so poor I think it really is pointless.

to clarify this one. Frank is not the bad man in this case, Frank is simply an agent for many people and Thai motorbike stores. Frank is representing the bad man and I have met Frank and he seems ok, typical salesman but ok and quite knowledgeable about bikes ect ect

dont hesitate in doing business with Frank (although he did vouch for the bad man selling the bike so that could say something) but YES beware of the R1 on baht and sold.. its being sold by a man with many enemies.

as for the original post on this forum, his phone is still off and so I suppose we cant really comment on this one until someone actually speaks with him or goes to see the bike. im all for going to see it and ringing him but first i need an address ..anyone??

HI

My God, do you say that people should still buy bikes from "Frank" even if he know there is no green book????, if he is an agent he shoud make sure everything is OK with the bike, i cant believe you say its not his fault, come on Man.
