Edge In Thailand And Ability To Watch Bbc Iplayer Etc

Featured Replies

Am not a computer wizard so if the answer is obviously not then fair enough.

My kids watch in UK via a fairly "slowish" broadband connection and view without pausing.

Will Edge do the job or better to let the programmes download and view after ??

Chivas

You won't be able to watch BBC video from outside the UK unless you have some sort of VPN link in the UK.

Now you have lost me !

If I put in the url for example for ITV catch up ( not live) using a GPRS, Edge or a broadband connection in Thailand what stops me from watching as per from a wireless connection in the UK ? (a connection that is actually the next door neighbours unsecured signal !)

Whats this VPN link ??

If you try and access the BBC iPlayer site from (a machine that appears to be) outside the UK then you get a message saying you cannot do that - however the message goes on to say you can use a proxy server. This is a computer with a UK address which will access sites like the BBC and pass them on to you even though you are outside the UK. These usually charge and the free ones can deliver malicious software.

A VPN connection is a virtual private network. You connect you machine via VPN to another network and all your data passes through that network making you machine appear to be part of it. Most often used to allow people to connect to office networks when working from home e.g. The Oxford English Dictionary checks the address of visitors and if your employer's network has a subscription you get full access. I don't get this from home but if I VPN into my University's network I get access even though I am still at home because I appear to be on the University network. VPNning from abroad into a UK network will fool BBC iPlayer into thinking you are in the UK. Again this kind of access can be bought for a price.

If you can get access but the connection is just too sloooow you can download content using the BBC's own self deactivating system or you can download the program using something like iPlayer Downloader (the first link if you Google [ iplayer downloader ]) and view the program at your leisure in a media player like VLC.

BBC is not allowed to stream their content outside of the UK due to copyright reasons.

Add to that that GPRS/EDGE is simply too slow for streaming video. It is on average 50% of the slowest ADSL connection (256 kbps).

Audio (radio programs) stream just fine though.

I did have some success with streaming video, streams specifically encoded for mobile devices, but not too much content is around...

Hi, just moving into a rental house. So I take it from comments that ADSL on the phone line would be better than using EDGE?
