DPM:Police has duty in security control in the rally

Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs, Suthep Thuagsuban said police must take responsibility to control security in big rally of red-shirt group on March 26, while suggesting people to consider ex-Prime Minister’s movement.

Mr.Suthep said that the police had the duty in security control in big rally of red-shirt group, which would gather on March 26, while they also needed to prevent Government House seizure. If police staffs were not enough, they could ask for reinforcement from the military.

Meanwhile the government would manage the situation within the legal framework. He considered it difficult to negotiate with the protesters because they had clear intention to cause chaos in the country. However he asked for the protesters to not cause any trouble to the people.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that people should consider the movement of the former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra by themselves. Meanwhile if the institutions of the Privy Council and the Court of Law were damaged by the allusions, there would be prosecutions accordingly.

Violence-prone Petchawat has said he will be bringing his group to the rally.

Does this mean that gays will be barred from Sanam Luang? :o

Thai Pride Parade Canceled After Protest

The second gay pride parade in Chiang Mai, Thailand, was called off at the last minute Feb. 21 following virulent on-site protests by 30 members of a group called Rak Chiang Mai 51, The Nation newspaper reported. Pride organizers said they feared the march would descend into violence, despite the presence of 150 police officers.

Rak Chiang Mai 51 spokesman Petchawat Wattanapongsirikul said pride events should be held in other cities, such as Phuket and Pattaya.

“Chiang Mai people cannot accept this and will stop the parade by all means, even violence,” he said.

No one remembers yellows anymore

:o

Thailand not being big on carpets under which to try and sweep inconvenient realities, I guess it's natural to go for the airbrush approach to re-writing history instead. Actually, airbrush implies a subtle approach - whitewash fits better here.

Whitewash or airbrush is about presenting the history. My comment was about not-remembering it.

Whatever PAD did months ago, it doesn't envoke any emotional responses anymore, no passions. See the difference?

In a similar way PTP no confidence topics were all old, irrelevant news. They haven't said a thing about government performance, the ONLY reason to have this debate in the first place, they spent days on digging up twnety year old records and payslips from five year old election campaign.

All legitimate issues in their own ways but absolutely irreleavant to parliamentary debate in the middle of the worldwide crisis.

It has nothing to do with whitewashing at all. Just not here, not now.

If there were a material - as opposed to semantic (at best) - difference to see, I'd be seeing it. The notion that "Whatever PAD did months ago, it doesn't envoke any emotional responses anymore, no passions" :D is self-evidently absurd - belied by the evidence all around you (not only on this forum but, more importantly, out in the real world).

Just the same as if the skewed version of censure debate issues, events and purposes that you paint were remotely balanced - let alone remotely complete - I'd be agreeing with it.

The 'Love Chiang Mai 51' red-shirt group gathered at Chaing Mai Airport to protest Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban’s arrival
Trying to say the reds will do or have done what the yellows did doesn't make it happen.

But surely in this case Koo, the reds did gather at our local airport, just as the yellows used to ? So it has happened, with the red-shirts, as it used to with the yellows ? :o

The notion that "Whatever PAD did months ago, it doesn't envoke any emotional responses anymore, no passions" is self-evidently absurd...

Time heals all wounds, especially emotional ones. It is absurd to expect otherwise.

PAD occupation of the airport is very far from people's minds already, without even going into discussion on whether PAD should or should not be punished.

Reds, of course, are making a big issue out it, for the lack of better rallying points, but for the rest of the country it's history already.

Last month reds couldn't keep their rally going even for two days, why would anyone think that the same old topics would energize them better now?

Now THAT is absurd.

Do you want the reds to block Suvarnabhumi? We won't do that.

This morning on tv, I saw Police test gun. They want the reds to behave on this 26th March. If they had done all of these warnings and gatherings, the yellows wouldn't have occupied Government House and airports.

If you know who the PAD guards are, you will not be surprised nothing has been done to stop them when State of Emergency was announced twice in Bangkok. They sent 200 Police to Suvarnabhumi to joke and they were blown by PAD right away.

22 companies of police to face UDD

Twenty-two companies of police would be assigned to maintain security during the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship's planned protest in front of Government House on Thursday, according to Metropolitan Police commissioner Worapong Chiewpreecha. Following the meeting with the army and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration officials on Tuesday, Pol Lt-Gen Worapong said the police will enforce the Korakot 48 (July 2005) plan during the anti-government rally.

According to the plan, security forces will use peaceful means to cope with the protesters and they will not retaliate or resort to aggressive measures. At the same time, 6,000 soldiers would be ready to assist the police, if needed.

More from the Bangkok Post here.

You mean, like oust useless, proxy PM's and effect positive change in Thai politics? :D

Back to the eggbox gal. :o

Blockading an airport and causing irreparable damage to the country's economy and reputation in the process.

"Positive change" is also debatable, especially when the Dems have to band together with Newin's mob to achieve anything.

Unfortunately it is looking increasingly like nothing has really changed, just different puppets but the puppeteers are the same.

Thai gov't setting up operation center to monitor anti-gov't movement

Thailand's Interior Ministry is setting up an operation center to monitor the movement of the anti-government protestors ahead of a mass rally planned on Thursday.

Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul said he had ordered Interior Ministry officials, particularly provincial governors to monitor the movement of the red-shirted people, the Thai News Agency reported.

The Ministry had also instructed provincial governors to inform local people to understand the government's implemented works and also encourage them not to join the anti-government protest in Bangkok, he said.

Provincial governors, who do not work properly, would be replaced with a more capable person, Chavarat has warned.

The anti-government protest could become violent, but police will prosecute anyone who breaks the law, said Chavarat.

Separately, Thai-language news agency INN reported that thousands of police and soldiers will be deployed on Thursday to handle the mass rally by the red-shirted group.

Nattawut Saikeua, core leader of the red-shirted people, or the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) told Xinhua Tuesday the group has planned to start gathering on Thursday in the morning at Sanam Luang in central Bangkok and later in the afternoon protestors will march to the Government House.

UDD core leaders have announced that the number of the anti-government protestors on March 26 will be much higher compared to its all previous rallies.

It is estimated the crowd of 200,000 to 300,000 from over 50 provinces across Thailand will participate in the rally in Bangkok, Weng Tojirakarn, one of the UDD core leaders said earlier.

The UDD core leaders have announced that the forthcoming mass rally will be prolonged, aiming to topple the current coalition government.

Thaksin vows to bare all about his opponents on Thursday

Ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra has promised to end his silence in order to tell his side of the story about the social divisions and the political turmoil erupted since he came to power.

"I have to shake things up in order to separate the black from the white," he said in his phone-in to the red-shirt crowd in Phitsanulok on Tuesday's night.

He said his silence did not bring about peace as he had previously hoped.

He began his 10-minute speech by thanking his Phitsanulok constituents for their continuing support.

He praised Phitsanulok MP Niyom Changpinit for loyalty and lamented that another MP Monchai Wiwathanart deserted him to join the coalition Social Action Party.

He pleaded that only Thai people could help him return to his homeland. He said he would devote his time to lead the country as a show of gratitude in return for the people's help to bring him back.

He said his leadership brought about a thriving democracy and a strong government, hence causing resentment to his opponents who stood to gain from the weak political system.

He said the country has plunged to a lowest depth since ousting him from power. He claimed his return could help to restore democracy and advance the country forward once again.

Although he did not make any swipe at the Privy Council like in the Sunday's phone-in, he said one of the coup leaders, General Saprang Kallayanamitr, decided to join in the seizure of power because of his fear to be sacked.

PM: Red shirt rally not prolonged

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjjajiva believed the rally of red-shirt groups would not be prolonged.

The Prime Minister said his handing out of 2,000 baht aid checks held at the community square or Lan Kon Muaeng tomorrow (March 26) was not to flee from the red-shirt rally but he had been scheduled beforehand to perform duties elsewhere.

The Prime Minister added the Government would keep the rally in tight control and had instructed the security unit not to use violent measures. He also believed the violence would not occur in the rally of the red shirt anti-government supporters and it would not be prolonged.

He affirmed he would keep on working at the Government House as the red shirt groups only wanted to show their strength and the intensity of the rally would fade if negotiations with upcountry protesters became effective.

Regarding the case of the community radio which defamed Privy Councilors on political issues, the Prime Minister dismissed all claims and called for all sides to help ease the country’s problems.

The metropolisl however has put 900 municipal workers on alert to coordinate efforts with the police. A number of women municipal authorities have been tasked with taking part in the event in hopes of smoothing over negotiations and reducing tension. Municipal authorities will mainly focus on providing utilities to demonstrators with 30 mobile lavatories prepared for the event.

What's wrong with Khun Thaksin? His mistake is to win 2 elections in a row.

What he was wrong was he did not please yellow people and those in the dark.

His biggest fault is to make the poor believe that their lives can be improved if a proper PM is in charge.

His bad act was he makes people think PMs from Democrat Party have not done good things to poor people because this is the party for the rich.

Those who are jealous when they can't stand in this position are against Khun Thaksin:

T. biggest mistake was stealing too mcuh for himself and pissing off half the country.

Just think for a moment, what if Thaksin accepted Chamlong's offer back in January 2006 - apologise, give 25% of the Shin sale income back to the society, and go on with your life?

Would worked out cheaper for him and saved the country years of turmoil, and it'd surely be remembered as a statesman's act, and he'd still be at the helm.

But that wouldn't be "our" Thaksin - greedy, selfish, and egoistic. "Our" Thaksin is reduced to juggling prepaid cards in second rate hotels somewhere in Nicaragua.
