Us Embassy Kept Passport And Is Mailing It Back... Is The Visa Being Issued?

I'm used to getting an affirmative yes or no to things... my boyfriend just applied for a US tourist visa and after 5-7 minutes of questioning they said to him "we're finished now... you'll get you passport back in the mail". They didn't state if he's getting a visa or not and of course my boyfriend didn't ask the question directly. Does this mean he's getting the visa? I want to assume that if it was denied they would just return the passport back immediately.

Thanks!

Yep, that's the way it works, if it's a reject the Consulate has no more action to take so they just hand back the passport. If approved, they'll hold it overnight for processing then EMS it back to you.

Let us know when it's returned if it's a single entry visa or one of the 10-year ones. I'd bet on the 10 year, even tho this'll be his first trip.

You checked the weather? Sort cold in Portland, Or & D.C. area, the only places I checked this morning.

Congrats!

Mac,

Thanks for the positive news... we'll commence with tonight's celebration festivities as planned!!!

I'm curious, however, what makes you think he'll possibly get a 10 year visa? I would have never thought to anticipate that. I thought those were only given on your second visa application to the US.

He's complaining about the chill in Thailand now and my parents live in Wisconsin so we would be definitely waiting until spring to visit!

The 10 year multi entry has been the standard issue for the last 5 years or so, since they started making every applicant have an interview. My wife’s first visa in 2002 was a 3 month single entry given without either of us going to the consulate. Application dropped off by driver and passport picked up next day with visa.

The visa arrived via post today... 2 years, multiple entry. Not quite 10 years, but far better than 3 months, single entry!

Yep, not too bad really for a first time visa. Next time, after one or two trips to the U.S. AND BACK TO THAILAND, it'll be the 10-year visa.

Duplicate topic with this one:

...In the end the interviewer said "we're finished now... you'll get you passport back in the mail"... so I still don't know for sure if he got the visa or not!

:)
