I've been working in Bangkok and have an extension of stay good until April 9, but I've quit my job as of last week. As I understand it, I have 7 days to leave the country once the work permit has been returned. But could I get away with staying until April without getting a fine when I leave? i.e. when my work permit is returned to the labor dept. will my extension of stay be automatically cancelled in the immigration records? Any help appreciated.

Tks

I think they changed it from 7 days to 24 hours to report to immigration, anyway thats what a guy at my place was told when he quit last month,

He had to go get a tourist visa (60 days) from Lao, becareful you could end up with a big overstay fine (500baht a day upto 20,000 max)

Ps i am sure some one will correct me if i am wrong

If you are on an extension of stay your permission to stay will be cancelled the same day you stop working. You can get a 7 day extension for 1,900 baht. No longer needed to hand in the WP.

For the procedure have a look at the 2 articles here: http://www.dejudomlaw.com/index.php?option...09&Itemid=9

Your employer is supposed to notify labour department and immigration. Can you illegaly stay? Yes, but be prepard to pay 500 baht a day with a maximum of 20,000. Better leave the county and just get a tourist visa. Safe and legal.

OK, thanks. Still, seems to me that I could stay until my visa expires and they'd be none the wiser. The HR guy at my co. is possibly the laziest man alive and there's no way he's going to notify immigration if he can save himself a taxi journey!
