400.000 Baht For 12 Months Visa Extension Based On Marriage, Can They Be From The Wife's Thai Account?

Hi everyone,

sorry, just saw that the topic title is a bit misleading...I meant can they be transferred from the wife's thai bank account to my own thai bank account.

What with the terrible EUR-THAI baht exchange rates I'd rather not transfer a whole lot of money these days and the option of showing my wife's income seems to have been taken away for real too so I am planning to transfer 400.000 Baht to my thai bank account from my wife's account.

My history: I am 34 years old, german, married to a thai national and in the last 2 years I have been on non-immigrant 12 months visas based on marriage. I have had 2 consecutive extensions for 1 year based on marriage and wife's salary, both have been a breeze and I got them from the suvarnabhumi immigration(very pleasant). Now that laws have changed and suvarnabhumi is no more I am preparing for the 400.000 Baht in my thai bank account option and going to dreadful Suan Plu for the first time for renewing it. I have been told that these 400.000 baht have to come from an overseas bank account though and cannot be transferred from a thai bank account to my own thai bank account as they will not accept that, is that true? I couldn't really find that info in all the threads discussing this topic. Would be nice to get some clear answers. As for the 2 months rule, how do they calculate, by month or by actual exact date?

Thanks,

Basch

The rules now say that the money must be in an account in your name alone.

Not even a joint account is acceptable.

As far as I know the 2 months rule is exact dates.

Yes, it has to be your money only. But for old cases applying for an extension before 29 Nov. 2009 they can use the old rules and aprove on your wife's income only. I say can, as they have they don't have to.

The money in the bank doesn't have to come from overseas. It has to be in the account for 2 months actual date. Don't forget to ask for a letter from your bank confirming the money in the bank for 2 months. Apply for the letter 1 or 2 days before doing your extension and bring your bank book too. The rest you already know as you have done the extension before.

Hi,

thanks and sorry, I messed up the topic title, I was planning to use my own account on my own name, not a shared account, but the money would be transferred from one of my wife's bank accounts, not europe/overseas. I will be transferring the money 2 months before to my own Kasikorn Bank Account which I have been using for around 4 years with money coming in both from thailand and from overseas. At this moment, there are less than 400.000 Baht on it, in fact only 20.000 or so. So the easiest way for me is to transfer 400.000 from my wife to my account. I was under the impression that would be fine but a friend told me they will not accept it because they can see that the 400.000 Baht came from my wife's thai account and not overseas?

There is no rule that says the money has to be imported from abroad. However some Immigration offices like to invent their own rules. As for 2 months I should imagine it means. 10th Feb application has to be in the bank since 10th Dec.

I shall imagine I will be in the same boat as you in a years time so let us know how you get on.

Yes,please share your experience.

I may have the same problem later in the year(both my and my wife income previously)and if Immigration doesn't change the rules again, any info is welcome! :o

I will post an update here as soon as I know more. I am still not sure whether I should try to get an extension based on the wife's salary again first (since I have been doing that since 2 years already and it has been said that it may still be accepted) or straight away go for the 400.000 Baht option. Maybe I should bring along both.

Cheers,

Taking both along would seem a sensible idea. :o:D

Don't forget to ask for a letter from your bank confirming the money in the bank for 2 months.

Just a minor point:

The bank only confirms the balance as of the day you apply for the letter. The bank does not state/confirm how long the money has been in the account.

This is why Imm want to see the book to make sure the funds have been seasoned as required.
