Featured Replies

I know this has been spoken about for years but... I was chatting to someone with pretty solid connections in CM who is convinced a Casino will go up near the Shangri La - Yes I know this is likely to be BS but anyone have any convincing comments to add? not about whether IYHO it should or should not happen but anything to support it may happen???

BS!

I know this has been spoken about for years but...

As you say above... and I don't see anything today that makes it any more likely to come to fruition.

Maybe the guy who owns Chang beer and who is rumoured to be buying a certain big hotel at the end of the Changklan Road has enough power and infuence to develop a casino..... Maybe.

what is IYHO?

International Youth Hostel Organisation?????

:o:D:D

Thanks for sharing this piece of information, Now I know what it is :D

One guy owns Chang Beer :o Is this true? Where can I meet him???

Rumors of casinoes are most closely associated with Thaksin, his party and his cronies. I think a lot of hotel development in Chiang Mai occurred because of the belief that Thaksin would "make it so". Luckily he could not, and I hope no one ever does.

I've nothing against casinoes and they work wonderfully as discrete destinations such as Las Vegas, Monaco, Macau, Lausanne, etc. but they are not conducive to generally healthy communities.

Isn't gambling illegal in Thailand? So, wouldn't it be necessary to change that law before any kind of casino could open?

Given the level of gambling addiction seen amongst many Thai people, I think a casino anywhere is a very bad idea.

You don't have to signal a social conscience by looking like a frump. Lace knickers won't hasten the holocaust, you can ban the bomb in a feather boa just as well as without, and a mild interest in the length of hemlines doesn't necessarily disqualify you from reading Das Kapital and agreeing with every word. ~Elizabeth Bibesco

On the other hand, it is better to have legal casinos than gambling dens.

On the contrary, I really hope you don't think Chiang Mai is a healthy community.

IMHO, IIBS. CAIILOS.

Translation:

In my humble opinion, it is bullshit. Casinos are illegal in LOS.

You've never heard of the Elephant Man?

Not sure if this is a joke or serious?? I saw a movie called the elephant man once... but he wasn't thai :o

I cross my fingers for a legal casino in Thailand. Its the best way to stop the illegal gambling.

How?

Think there would be many more murders and suicides if gambling became legal in Thailand, and more bad apples coming from underneath the woodwork, namely farangs in thai name.

I believe he is now the richest man in Thailand, I believe Chang also owns the Meridien, maybe you'll find him sitting at the bar :o

If gambling addiction is such a huge problem, then obviously the law isn't working.

I agree that having a "casino anywhere", is a bad idea but I doubt you're going to get them to shut all the casinos in Macau, Monte Carlo, or Las Vegas. Having a casino in CM would allow the Thai gov't to regulate and tax them instead of having underground casinos or forcing Thais to go to Laos, Burma and Cambodia. People are going to gamble. The govt would like to keep the money in the country.

I just hope that when the casinos come to Thailand (not "if" they come), that they're somewhere in the south and not here.

I heard a few years ago that Mr Chang man was building more than one 5 star hotel in Chiang Mai.

Apparently he cannot take his vast fortune out of the country due to pending litigation with Carlsberg.

As far as I know Le Méridien hotel chain belongs to Air France. But Accor (another French group) and a Saudi prince are trying to buy it (therer are two rivals, a British group and Lufthansa)

Of which (gambling dens) there are many in Chiangmai :o

i can tell you it will not happen, maybe one day when there is a stable goverment but due to current economic and polictical problems it is like putting gas on the fire no goverment would dare to introduce something like this while walking on thin ice.I made a serious bet with a arsehol_e on this last year and he still hides like a rat in a hole and avoids clearing his payment with me.While the red/yellow shirt problem is with us there will be no daring moves by any somchai and his pals what ever colour they decide to sport.

Le Méridien is owned by Starwood (who also own Westin and Sheraton, plus several other brands) who acquired it in 2005. It was originally owned by Air France but that was a long time ago and its passed through several owners since then.

That said, I believe all the new operations are franchised or leased buildings which is where Chang is involved.

A quick google pulled up a very interesting article about property in the Night Bazzar which sheds more light on it:

balo,

If the government doesn't make a profit from it then it's illegal. When the government makes a profit it's legal. Just like America! The problem with governments is that they don't like competition. :o
