Western Ideals In Regards To Relationships In Thailand

I read a post once on a young Thai girl's blog where she criticized a Thai girl she saw shopping with a much older man. She said that although the cashier might not be able to buy the stuff that this Thai girl can because of her much older partner, the cashier can take pride in the fact that she has not stooped to this girl's level.

In Western culture, women who marry for money are looked upon badly. Many children movies contain caricatures of this type of female character and its looked upon negatively.

On this board, many go out of their way to clarify that they married a girl from a good family, a virgin, and not a girl from a bar.

The question I have is, do you look at all those Thai girls out there who work long hard hours for low wages and are not willing to sell their bodies as being morally superior to those who do? Or do you views these girls as dumb for not taking the easy money?

Now many will say, that everyone make's their own choice and neither is good or bad, but I think in the back of those people's heads they make a judgment, they just choose not to share it publicly, which is fine, but this is just the internet, so share away.

Yes. But morality doesn't pay the bills.

Yes, work 50 hours a week or make the same wage in a couple of hours.

Should those who choose the latter be looked down upon for their choice? Society says that they should. Do you?

Pretty much, yes I do. I am gay but the same thing with bar boys versus real jobs. Its a dirty business and you know what they say, lie down with dogs you will get fleas.

interesting question.

In my experience the ladies that work normal jobs i.e bank,office,shop are just as able to to empty your bank a/c as any bar girl if you let them.Many of these workers will also work evenings short time to top up their salary,so my answer is "up to you" whether you date a b/g or a lady that works in the above mentioned jobs.I've met many b/g who will fleece farangs at the first oppotunity and ive met many who have been honest and trustworthy to their farang partners.

What I fail to understand is the relation between the age difference and calling the girl a prostitute. Rupert Murdoch is almost 40 years older than Wendi Deng, would you call her a prostitute? She was a vice president at Star TV when they met.

Then what's wrong with a girl who chose a financially secure man that will provide a safe home and a good education to her kids? Don't you find someone who chose a mate only on his good look a bit shallow?

Now a prostitute is a prostitute, we all know what a prostitute is, and I can honestly say, and I'm talking for our friends and family, we will always be polite and respectful if one of our friend marries a prostitute but he can't expect to be invited for Christmas ...

Then you simply are talking about stealth prostitutes who have a respectable cover to play the same game. Not sure of the advantage of that. At least with a bar worker you get someone who is focused on only the one job at hand. Moonlighters tend to be tired, having to get up early in the morning and be bored all day. Edited by Jingthing

Age difference has a lot to do with it they choose older men for the money, in a way they sell their body for security. Do you really think they would love (on average) the old guy that they are with if he did not have the money. If the answer is no then they are in fact prostituting their body.

If your gf is a lot younger then you and looks a lot better and you have a lot of money chances are she is after the money. There are always exceptions of course but in general i am sure im right.

I could not be happy in a relationship where my partner likes me for money, my gf is 9 years younger then but that isnt that unusual im talking about bigger age differences.

Do i respect hardworking girls more then prostitutes.. im not sure about that. it depends on the person. There are good prostitutes who dont scam ppl and there are bad hardworking girls who would scam ppl if they had the chance.

My father was 20 years older than my mother. She was quite attractive and he didn't have a lot of money or seem to care about it very much. If she was a "hooker", she wasn't a very successful one. :o

Know what...I once read an article ....by a woman...who was a sort of gossip columnist.........

And she said in her experience she would never again bother having sex with a man under 40 years old!!!!

Yep age was certainly relevant to her.....

I don't like to judge people....until you are actually in their shoes, given their options...who knows what you would do with your life.

One has to wonder how many offers she was getting

It might be true it might not be but in general i think big age differences are more out of money then love.. and i would not place too much fate in gossip columns but hey if that is what you like to read.

The lady wrote a column...her article was not a response but an observation...her words if I recall were 'take time to make sure the woman is enjoying herself...and always grateful'......make of that what you will!!!......an observation which perhaps eludes some TV contributors. There seems to be an acceptance among many, that a middle aged man cannot be stimulating...both sexually and mentally....cannot be kind and caring....cannot be entertaining......the point I make is that why must the assumption be such age gaps are all about money....in every case???? I accept there will be cases where this is so!!!.... :o

My advice is to avoid hookers. The worst type is the type that doesn't accept money on the first date. She is playing the long con. Beware of the long con. It will cost you more.

Find someone you actually admire of a similar age, with a similar job and income and you will be able to establish a reationship..

Admiration is the key.

Don't fall for that smile of a young girl. She is out to get yout money.

Sometimes being paranoid is just having all the facts.

GFL.

When I first moved to Thailand, I worked with one of the Thai engineers. He was actually my driver and adviser until I got used to living and driving in Thailand. One of the things we talked about, naturally, was women. He advised me that Thai people think that the acceptable ages between a man and a woman are half the man's age plus seven years. I can tell you for a fact that it has worked for me. :o

ADDED - At this point in life, my wife is too old for me. :D

When you think about it, it's quite a good rule.

When you're 20, she's 17;

your'e 30, she's 22;

you're 40, she's 27;

you're 50, she's 32

My wife won't be very happy when I'm going to tell her that if I want to respect Thai tradition I need to find a younger wife, but as people say, when in Rome ...

The question is biased.

Looks good in principle.........

Now apply the fact that most Thai women look 10 years younger than they are......what are you 'seeing' on the streets?

That's not a Thai saying. The 1/2 + 7 rule is a very common saying in America on the youngest person it would generally be considered ok to date.

I was born and raised in the US and never heard that until I moved to Thailand. Maybe it's a good rule everywhere.

For me it's spot on now, but wasn't when I met her.

Most women in the West marry (or hope to) guys who are better off than they are.. It's the way of the World. Even if a woman in the West is career orientated and wealthy in her own right she still hopes that her husband is richer..

So educated Thai women with a job marrying wealthier guys (who are sometimes older too) is hardly unusual.. It's pretty normal even amongst Thais.

What is unusual in Thai society is men marrying prostitutes and bargirls... Only poor Thais do that..

Yes I do. I look down on poor girls (who may have the looks advantage) to sell their bodies and/or go for older men who buy them gifts. I look down on financially comfortable girls who do the same even more.

I respect immensely the poor girls who make a choice to study and work at the same time whilst maintaining good Thai morals. Plenty of them who wouldn't dream of taking up offers of materialsm in exchange for a fake relationship.

never heard that before.... does it apply to women dating men too? because come to think of it, the guy i am dating is exactly that...

As far as I've heard it used, yeah it does. Maybe it's a generational or regional thing, but pretty much everyone I know will have heard of that 'rule.' More of a joke than anything, but still.

I have total admiration for any young girl, anywhere in the world, who when faced with the impossible choices to earn a living, put aside their own preferences, to provide for their families and children. They accept scorn and ridicule from people like youself. Yet they are prepared to suffer for the greater good, sometimes in loveless marriages far from the families they support. They are heroes.
