Send in that mighty Cambodian Juggernaut army - arriving in Toyota pick up trucks. That will put the fear of God into them.

This headline is inflammatory and dumb. I get a TV Breaking News flash in the email, and immediately check the BKK Post and Nation websites, expecting to see some update on the situation. Instead, what do I find? Nothing, because is a non story.

Thanks Pierrot....Next time, just shout "Wolf Wolf Wolf" like you're supposed to.

People in pick-up trucks have done a pretty good job at showing how ineffective the US military machine is in Iran and Afghanistan for the last few years so I wouldn't be making judgments based on the mode of transport the Cambodians might use. That of course comes after a rag-tag group of people in pyjamas and flip-flops chased the same military machine out of Vietnam. :o

When the gloves come off.... there is a different storry to tell. Just ask Japan.

Lucky for them they did won that war, otherwise they would have been convicted as war criminals and executed for throwing an A bomb on the head of innocent and defenceless unarmed civilians.

I like the Japanese, but they were very brutal in WW II. You might ask the Chinese how "innocent" the Japanese were in Nanjing in 1937. But its easier to just lash out and not worry about objectivety. Had the US not used the A bomb, retaking Japan would have been a drawn out blood bath with millions of Japanese casualities, both military and civilian. The Allies (US, UK, ANZAC, and Soviets) would have suffered major casualites as well.

Back on topic, the temple/border spat actually suits both governments. Thailand is the success story in SE Asia (compared with Burma, Laos and Cambodia) so Cambodian President Hun Sen get major face for not backing off and willing to stand up to the Thais. The Thai government gets a unifying distraction from the ongoing politiac and economic chaos. Hey, for now its win, win for both sides. When they need/want to solve the issue, they will. Perhaps a neutral third party will administer the site and both counties split the tourist proceeds.

Also, don't forget about "rogue" comanders. Maybe some hero wana be junior Thai officer made an unauthorised decision to up the ante and cross the border.

Time to burn it !

(with the pope inside maybe ?)

;-)

:o:D :D

And why is there always someone that has questionable brain power to find it funny??

Why don't you use your superior brain power and explain us what good does the pope do.

This is just a distraction for the Thai government. It takes a poor situation and creates a bit of nationalism/protectionism.

The conflict has had a similar effect on Cambodia. It was very good news for the Cambodian government. It was given an excellent opportunity to show its strength, just a month before last year's elections. So, thank you Thailand for your support of corruption and keeping your neighbours poor!

Or possibly a reflection of how these papers gather/braodcast the "news" - I suspect they are waiting for the official govt line.

:D Did you sprain a finger or wrist when checking the websites.....maybe you can sue someone. :o

Have you ever thought about turning ur email notification off or batting off somewhere else :D ?

I beg your pardon? Can you explain yourself?

If you have done something wrong, will you own up? No.

If Thai Army enter Khmer (which is wrong), the Thai side will keen quite about it.

The Thai Army will do everything in their power to blackout the news.

Just like the Thai Navy never advertise everytime they toll refuge out to sea.

I don't blame them. This is just human nature. Denine until caught with prove beyond doubt. Even Mark does that, remember?

:o Alot of US bashing going on. No one can deny that the US has the most technologically advanced army in the world but to win a war and occupy a country whilsts avoiding civilian casualties and winning hearts is probably impossible in this day and age.

I performed my military service in Germany(1967-1968) and participated in several joined Nato maneuvers. And the GI's where indeed the best equipped, but their performance in the field was weak very weak, the most important reason was their arrogance thinking that they thought they are simply the best, and they could not comprehend that somebody could mach them, and lack of respect for their opponenent.

Comparing them with the Brits, French and Canadians they performance was far below standard.

I'm a Thai national and I am seriously annoyed at how the government is dealing with this crisis.

For the love of god, respect the UN's decision already. It's just a bloody temple, we have 10,000 more of those in the country >.<

I'm especially sickened as to how the military treats this issue. Not too long ago someone (with a serious misunderstanding in history I might add) made a powerpoint on all the times we have lost territory. That included really retarded things like Indochina (which were our protectorates and not really national provinces) and the ceding of some southern provinces to Malaysia. Totally taken out of context (sacrificed VOLUNTARILY by Rama V to preserve our independence...a worthy sacrifice if I may add, not to mention how the lost territory is mostly jungles and mountains), the ppt did nothing but to rile up nationalism with exaggerations and falsities.

What did the military do?

They practically worship that thing. Every statistic, every written word is treated as the <deleted> bible. Not too long ago I went to the Ror Dor boot camp at Khao Chon Gai and sure enough, they devoted 2 hours and a colonel to drill this bullshit into our heads.

Did people believe it? I don't know, but it seems that about half were almost ready to run against a Cambodian machine gun, and the other half were too busy talking about DotA tactics :o

Are you really such an uninformed jackass as to think that the US military machine is ineffective? What are you basing this profound bit of wisdom on? And, by the way, have you ever checked out the score on that Vietnam thing? Anybody with half a brain knows that the only thing that ened that completely one-sided ass kicking was Jane Fonda and ignorant boobs like you. :D

Its normal that Americans think like you, because the US press don't tell the public the truth because the news is censored and manipulated.

Worldwide press freedom index

2002 placed-17

2003 placed-31

2004 placed-22

2005 placed-44

2006 placed-53

2007 placed-48

2008-placed-36

And still this country proclaims itself as the leader of the free world and democracy.

Yes I see the quotation marks, yet nowhere in this thread could I see another poster stating this, its not clear to me, perhaps I'm not keeping up :o ...wouldnt be the first time. Can you show me which poster initially stated this (becos i cant find it), as he is the person my comment is obviously directed to, not tvmonitor.

OT, but as reported by my little brother that is in the Army as a specialist, is that during joint operations the GIs are often drilled hard to their own tasks and lacks ability to take over the tasks of others if needed, unlike the doctrine of some other forces. Take it as you will.

A stute point I am usually as cynical and Geordie Asheet is in dire doodoo without a world slump

Oddly nothing in Bangkok Post 5 mins ago

Unless they are deciding how to spin it for the evening news and sir up some pride before the real crisis occurs

Peaceful transitions can be bumpy in transparent democracies and we aint seen nothing yet and the temple is a trump card anytime

Perhaps demolish it and Canterbury cathedral The Vatican the temple of Flatter day feints and pour the rubble on the big C

ube at Makkah then roll it all over the wailing wall into area 51 the new age Rome

The fidelity religion seems to account for almost equal disharmony to relationship infidelity

Just grind it all into a big lucky amulet and let the AIS sell it by the minute

Any further speculation regarding the Pope would be off-topic.

I think Thailand is crying out for a fight. They've had it too good for too long ... Theyre spoilt and have attitudes. What with their internal trouble making and violence and disrespect and now killings over a temple .... I think they need a good fight to learn (or remember) how bad things can be, they haven't known suffering for hundreds of years. I think Thailand is pumped up for a fight and maybe it would do them good to have one. So they will chill out again and be as they were :o

It won't "do them good", the boys who will be maimed and die if there is fighting will be National Service Conscripts. The sons of those who are stirring all this up will be nowhere near the fighting.

Actually, it's a very accurate statement in this situation.

The Bangkok Post did post a story about it.

It was only about 4 or 5 sentences long and said that Cambodian troops had accused Thai troops of a minor incursion into their territory, that the Thai troops had then left, and that the situation had resolved itself. The accusation was all from the Cambodian side, but that even at the end of this briefest of articles... the situation was over.

So much for "The Big War".... :o

Agreed.

It makes me so angry that I sometimes wonder why I keep persevering with this site.

Mention Gays or object to gay adverts, or disagree with what a mod says, and your post is deleted in a heart beat. Something bad about the US or Muslims, post deleted!

Say something derogatory about one of the advertisers on this site, same thing.

Yet a disgusting remark, that offends myself and I would imagine, most other Catholics, is allowed to remain.

You mods should be ashamed!!

Yes, I know I can use the report button, but you mods, each and every one of you has seen these disparaging comments, and have allowed them to stand.

Someone needs to get their priorities right :o

Correct, last year I visited and old navy fort near by Bangkok where you could visit the fort and an old warship. For more than an hour the military guide talked how much territory Thailand lost. You've got the impression that Thailand in early day's was bigger than China.

Outside was a statue of some Admiral where people made offerings and pray encouraged by the military.

EXCELLENT OBSERVATION! The world's greatest military machine I might add.

That's some world class stupid right there. But then, with a name like 'photojourn' one shouldn't expect anything approaching the truth about how the war in Iraq actually turned out.

Soldier loses leg in border mine blast

By: AFP Published: 2/04/2009 at 04:50 PM A Thai soldier lost a leg after stepping on a landmine in a disputed area along the border with Cambodia, where tensions remain high following a deadly clash last year, the military said.

The incident came two days after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen warned Bangkok there would be fighting if Thai troops crossed their disputed frontier, and a week after an alleged trespass by about 100 Thai soldiers.

"One Thai soldier was wounded when he stepped on a mine while patrolling this morning in the disputed area. He lost his left leg and is being treated in hospital,'' deputy army spokesman Col Sirichan Ngathong said. "The situation there so far is normal.''

Cambodian troops said they were on "high alert'' after the incident.

First of all I would like to sent my sympathy to the poor guy. he was just following orders from pig head commanders.

That aside.

Didn't the Thai army always denine that they entered Cambodia?

Now the Cambodia have a Thai foot to prove it.

Which Thai FM call the PM of Cambodia a "gangster"?

And still insult him further by saying that he does not understand Thai language. Rub salt to wound?

"In the Thai language, the word 'Nak Leng' which I used during the debate means a person who is lion-hearted, a courageous and magnanimous gentleman, and this is what I referred to you as an expression of my appreciation of and respect for Your Excellency," Kasit added.

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-04/...nt_11121087.htm

We all know what he mean by "Nak Leng".GANGSTER.
