Comments, feedback please.

Today I had "breakfast" my mother-in-law cooked pork, mushrooms in sauce and rice. That was about 9:30-10am. About 1pm, my wife bought some cornettors style icecreams and ices from one of those motorcycle vendors, the one with the coolers etc.

About 2pm I started sweating really badly, I tried going to the toilet (3 times) no deal, and I was feeling like being sick. About half an hour later, wooosh, both ends let rip. Not nice, vomitted about 3 times, everything came out. Faeces was black, runny etc. Stomache pain was pretty bad.

Luckily I have had this sort of thing before. Have antiobiotics, stomache pain tablets and immodium (god bless)

I reckon it was the icecream cornetto thing, my wife swears it was the mushrooms as she says thai mushrooms have a weird effect on farangs!

Opinions ?

most probably you had mushrooms many times before without any problems, so I wouldn't think so.

they are not much different from anywhere in the world, not the easiest to digest and shouldn't be eaten in large quantities at a time, but very nutricious.

if there were forest mushrooms there might be poisoneus ones - but everybody else is ok, so I would exclude it. Poison would work on everybody very similarly.

I don't think you should take any antibiotics - it's just a food poisoning, plenty of water with a pinch of salt, rise soup with some vegetable extract for taste and rest will do.

lucky that you get rid of all the poison - the worst, when it stays inside and does really damage health. Even from contaminated water you can have a very similar effect

I don't think it was the food as we both shared it.

It's very hard to taste if icecream is bad, mainly because of the strong flavour and the cold interfere.

I do think that it is the icream, as its (I believe) made out of egg, so if its being defrosted/frosted many times without selling, stuck with a load of ice in a cooler etc...

The other thing the time frame is right for the icrecream, if its got a high dose of bacteria already inside then they will hit you in about an hour.

Just wanted to see what you folks think and had similar experiences.

Thanks

i read once on this forum that people often get sick from those ice creams, as the electricity in thailand is not stable along the distribution routes and when it goes out they melt, then freeze again when it's back on. if that happens a couple of times i guess the ice cream is bad. not sure if that is just a rumor or not.

What you describe sounds like classic staphylococcal food poisoning for which milk products (inlcuding ice cream) are a very common source. Onset is rapid i.e. in about 2 hours.

Improper refrigeration indeed a factor.
