I had no trouble getting a work permit with an O visa at the Phuket Immigration office. Mind you, that was 6 years ago. Don't know if still the same. Worth asking in Phuket... :o

You do not have to change. You can work with a Non Imm O Visa if you have a Work Permit.

In fact it is a better option as it does not rely on your employment. Meaning you do not get kicked out of the country if you lose your job.

The reason im changing to a "B" is so my visa doesnt rely on my relationship, so can i switch it here or do i have to goto KL or singapore?

I'm sure that it can be done in Thailand.. Surely your lawyer can answer the question.

If you now have a Non O Visa obtained from a Thai Consulate then you will have to leave the country and apply for a Non Imm B Visa from a Thai Consulate.

That is if you really insist on changing when there is no need.

EDIT.

I note that you are about to seperate with your Wife so yes you probably will have to change. Why not wait until your current Visa nears expiry date. Which would be next year. A shame to loose it.

If your current permission to stay is not a 90-day entry stamp after arriving with a non-O visa but an annual extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai national, you just apply for a new extension of stay based on employment. No need to go abroad to get a non-B visa because the employment extension can be obtained when you originally had any type of non-immigrant visa. The only problem you might encounter is that sometimes the immigration officer wants your wife to sign a document saying that she agrees with your change away from the marriage extension. Talk to your immigration office and tell them that you would like to change because the employment extension is easier, no need to make two trips to the immigration office. It is probably also less work for the immigration office, ie they don’t have to send the application for employment extension to Bangkok or a regional office and wait for approval.

You do not have to do anything Visa wise until next year.

You will still have to do your 90 border runs,

unless you get a 12 month extension based on your new employment.
