I use Canola Oil for stir-fry's and Olive Oil for sauteing.

Canola oil has been claimed to promote good health due to its very low saturated fat and high monounsaturated fat content, and beneficial omega-3 fatty acid profile. The Canola Council of Canada states that it is completely safe and is the "healthiest" of all commonly used cooking oils.[18] It has well established heart health benefits[19] and is recognized by many health professional organizations including the American Dietetics Association, and American Heart Association, among others.[20][21][22][23] Canola oil has been authorized a qualified health claim from the US Food and Drug Administration [24] based on its ability to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to its unsaturated fat content.

I have seen it at most grocery stores.

There is a big difference in the taste, even among the same types of oil (so I am told), so you really have to experiment in what fits your taste buds (and your cooking). I am not the cook - only the eater.

I use canola for most things--it's relatively tasteless. I also use olive oil, but it has a stronger flavor, so I use it with foods that will have spices added to them.

Healthy oils:

Canola

Olive

Safflower or Sunflower

in more or less that order. Canola can be gotten in Tops and Villa, the others available in most large supermarkets.

They do cost more.

The really cheap oils here are all palm oil which is about as bad as you can get in terms of saturated fat.

Most people don't know this. ALL Oils, even the normally healthy ones are harmful the MOMENT they're exposed to intense heat ie. a heated frying pan. If you take your heatlh/diet seriously, don't eat anything fried.

This is a fact by the way. Any oil is an unhealthy oil the moment it's in the frying pan.

Hey there,

I would suggest you use rice bran oil for cooking or deep frying. You can purchase it at any of your local super markets, the average price is about 90bt/ltr. Simply do a google search on health benefits of rice bran oil.

It is a little more expensive than your common oils but your health is more important than just a couple of baht.

I would not recommend olive oil as it has a low smoking point and all the health benefits are destroyed when cooking or frying with olive oil.

Ukme has a very valid point!!!

Olive oil is not really suited for frying, it does not take high levels of heat very well. Olive oil in particular "extra virgin" olive oil is best for cold consumption.

Important is also that you change frequently the frying oil, and don't dispose of the old oil by pouring it down the drain. Give it back for recycling (I don't now where, though :o )

I'm in the camp that avoids the oils you typically find on the supermarket shelves.

I use organic Coconut Oil for cooking. You can use it time and time again, so the extra outlay is easily recouped. Canola Oil formerly known as rape seed oil receives some bad press... do a search for 'canola oil poison'... so I avoid it. I ensure that the oils I use are labelled 'organic cold pressed' (as much as you can trust the labelling). I also use Rice Bran Oil with 'Oryzanol' and take a spoonful of Extra Virgin Olive Oil daily.
