There seems to be a few on this Forum that are having trouble understanding the word " Banter "..

Banter = an exchange of light, playful, teasing remarks; good-natured raillery.

So i guess a Poll would be the best thing for the Forum so we know where we stand.

I've tried to give the best possible options as answers as possible so when you vote, please tell us what you voted for & why, but please don't question the word " Banter " as the meaning is from dictionary.com :o

If no Banter is wanted on the Forum, then in my opinion it will be a sad day for the Football Forum but let the people speak & let us hear their voice !! :D

Top option for me too.

Banter in my eyes should be about abusing and taking the piss out of other teams and other players. The problem occurs when people start abusing and taking the piss out of other members.

And anyone who didn't leave name-calling behind when they left school has some growing up to do.

A bit of respect is all that's needed.

Top option for me, though i have to admit to stepping other peoples boundaries sometimes, i get close to the line sh7t off people and i give that to others and it doesnt bother me in the slightest, if anything it makes the forum more fun for me, like who would have thought some part-time customer at a BIG club in NE England would even bother arguing with fans of some hick club who dress like mackems in disguise.

At the end of the day its an internet forum, im sure not one person on here has any mallice in anything they write.

Besides my club takes the piss out of itself there is hardly a need for a helping hand.

LOL :D Maybe you should ask Jimbo that one?!

Actually, you make a good point Singh. There are different levels of name-calling - it can be done in the spirit of friendly ribbing - or it can be done with vehnom and spite - it's the latter that should have no place here in my opinion.

If you contribute in the T*ttenham Thread, like hopefully you will over the next few days ( & of course get 3 points at <deleted> Fart Lane ), with their " touchiness ", they'll be asking to ban you without a doubt if you start on there... :o

I was a bit partial to a bit of persiflage myself - more into sledging nowadays. I can't honestly say that the only reason I used to post regularly on here. But anyway, option two fiited the bill more adequately.

When i used to go to football and Newcastle were totally sh7t with no prospect of ever getting better it seemed as if it was more for the laugh and the piss take and people widely accepted the sh7t, but as soon as they started getting good it was all taken too seriously and less people (not all) could accept a bit of piss take or losing for that matter without going over the top.

Seems as if its been that way since the Premier League got going, as it is for all premier league franchise customers.

Anyway clubs are taking the p7ss out of fans and they dont seem to do much ....... i was quoted 68gbp to watch Newcastle v Chelsea 1 day after Shearer came back ..... i would have had a cheaper seat on match day for 30 quid which was my intention until they sold out, thats the only p7sstake i despise in football ... i'd sooner watch it on P2P or the radio then pay that.

It's the same fo us San, i call it the Premier League Sky Fan, a horrible new Generation of Football Fan..

When i went out to Palermo from Thailand for a UEFA Cup Game there was loads of them, same as in the States & Canada this Year on our N American Tour, it was <deleted> horrible..

Unfortunately, if they were all Youngsters, you could half understand it as they'd know no better but it's not just Youngsters, some of this " generation " are grown Men, allegedly, as we see on here on a daily basis...

Our price for Boro at Home last Game of this Season ( a Category A Game because it's the last Game of the Season ) is 45 - 63 GBP, <deleted> scandalous, Boro were talking here...

optimistic is word that comes to mind - 65 gbp to watch a game of no importance - boro will be dead and relegated by then.

It's ;udicrous Jimbo, i mean, i like tuncay don't get me wrong, but for 63 GBP to wtach him play, i'd rather stalk him... :o

It will be sold out though ( Boro probably won't sell out their allocation depending if they have a chance to stay up or not ), that's the crazy thing..

look what i found here

Interesting, especially Post 11 which has an uncanny similarity to a Post on the Forum yesterday from a Fan of the same Team, but a completely different Poster, who then follows it up in Post 12, with 2 of the most unfunny Jokes i've ever heard & though they were " better "... :o

Got to admit, i think myself & Kevio would have got on like a House on Fire as everything he says about them like he says, & much like myself too, is completely 100% true... :D

Le Proof is in the Le Pudding as they say...

I voted for the 1st option, enjoy a bit of banter, but (although from the UK) have never understood the tribal mentality of UK football supporters 1 eyed opinions of their team as against opposing teams so it probably leaves me on the outer.I really like it when supporters can critisize their own team and give credit where credit is due if the opposing team has done well against theirs. And to give credit i have seen this done on the forum.

IMO there are many on the football forum who seem unable to do this and use snide, sarcastic remarks instead,if this is called banter then i dont really like it.So my interpretation of "banter" must be different.

by that definition then Ill never be up for good banter :D

but Ive always made this known to everyone here that I make a bad loser :D

PS. why would I give them the satisfaction of letting them know I think they are good (a hypothetical statement that were I to think so. only hypothetical mind you) :o

if you look at the Arsenal thread you will notice how the winners never hesitate to come in to gloat when they win over us. they dont need me telling them they are good or not. in fact I think its very very insensitive of them. you dont go to someone's funeral and show photos of how lovely your wedding or your newborn is do you? :D

insensitive lot!

It ok, I have let it be known that I am very poor winner :D

Well, if I do this on the man utd thread - I get called out for making fun of you on there too. Needless to say, if we beat you in the CL semis, just because I don't come on here and gloat about it, doesn't mean I won't be doing so off-line :wai:

that's probably the safest bet you will ever make.

DID you know that if you win this weekend and so do MU, that in the next month or so we will end up playing you guys 4 more times.

not sure if I can take that much of Arsene's red tie / grey suits but ok if I have to.

It's not life or death, there are more important things. So I found your analogy bewildering given your other comments. Be this as it may, sensitivity isn't really part of being a football supporter when it comes to opposing teams - especially towards "the big clubs". Their supporters are often arrogant and not even their local team. But you'd need to know the social history of the game to understand this. Anecdotally, I liked the Aston Villa supporters chant at Old Trafford: "We support our local team".

Banter has always been part of the make up of what used to be a Saturday carnival for working class people, that replaced the old seasonal festivals lost in the rural areas during migration to the industrial cities during the Industrial Revolution. It can be very witty, as anyone who has witnessed the banter between the Scousers and West Ham will testify. Although the Charlton supporters had a memorable one when they had to share Upton Park whilst their ground was being rebuilt. When playing Liverpool the chant was: "Are you the ones who nicked our ground?" It amused me anyway.

I've no time for nastiness and knuckle-dragging racism or the suchlike. But banter between supporters always enriched any match that I've been to, and most probably this forum more often than not.

I will add that I have a lot of sympathy for sanmigue's comments (Post #12). I think that the removing the game even further has likewise further sterilised the game. Perhaps then banter can be viewed as the last bastion of resistance for the true supporter ? Although most of those where priced out of going to games long ago. Or, like sanmigue and myself, just got totally alienated at the way the game has gone.

Having said that I would like to see a Chumps League Final between Le 'Arse and Barca, if only just for a love of the spectacle as an art form.
