I will be travelling to Thailand this summer with my 6 year old daughter. She has dual citizenship with both a Thai and US Passport. I had to recently get her Thai passport renwed at a Consular Visit and the lady from the Thai Embassy suggested she get a Visa to come to Thailand and use her US passport so she would not have a problem returning to the US. I thought what is the point of renewing her Thai passport if she needs a Visa to go to Thailand. This is the first time she is going back to Thailand since we left 2 years ago. At that time I showed her US Passport.

Anyone have any experience in traveling recently with this ituation??

Thanks,

LL

I don't think a Thai consular officer would be the best source of information cooncerning an entry back to the US.

She will not have a problem using her Thai passport for entry to Thailand and her US for going back. It's done everyday.

They can't refuse entry to the US because of not having a visa or stamp for entry to Thailand.

Similar to earlier guest reply, entry /exit Thailand with Thai passport and exit/return to USA with US passport is fine. It should not have problems.

I have dual citizenship with Thailand and do travel on a regular basis with both passports. I would suggest you leave the US normally with US passport and enter Thailand with the Thai passport. There is absolutely no problem in Thailand with that. When you depart for the US again however, check in counters will ask you for the US Visa if you show Thai passport, hence at the check-in counter you should show both passports, then when moving to the passport check you leave Thailand with the Thai passport, if emigration officers ask for US visas again, you can show them the US passport, but normally they will not ask or check visa for the US as their job is to apply the exit stamp from Thailand only.

Back in the US you enter the country with the US passport as normal. Very convenient with no hassle at all. Hope this helps.

Based on my wife's personal travel experience (she has dual citizenship...Thai and American). Leave and enter U.S. "Immigration" on U.S. passport...leave and enter Thailand "Immigration" on Thai passport. But at the "airline check-in" (in Thailand or in the U.S.) you "may" need to show both passports, but generally showing only the U.S. passport is all you need to do, as the U.S. passport proves you are cleared to exit/enter the U.S. and it also shows you are cleared to enter Thailand for at least 30 days without a visa. The airlines must only confirm that you are "initially" (i.e., for a few days/weeks) cleared to enter another country under that country's short-term entry rules; it's the travelers responsibility to apply for whatever visa which may be required if staying beyond what is automatically authorized. If the person enters Thailand under a Thai passport there is no visa requirement to apply for/to worry about; if a person enters the U.S. under a U.S. passport there is not visa requirement to apply for/to worry about.

Summary: show U.S. Immigration the U.S. passport; show Thai Immigration the Thai passport...neither country really cares what passport you used to leave the departure/last country...they only care about you having a passport and, if needed, a visa to enter the country; show the airline check-in the U.S. passport "or" if asked the Thai passport also; and if asked, don't worry about showing both the U.S. and Thai passports to either country's immigration or the airlines.

If you are staying more 30 days or don't have a return ticket the Thai passport will need to be shown because airlines can refuse boarding if you don't have a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days.

Whne leaving Thailand the airline will want to see the US passport to prove you can enter the US.

Immigration should never ask to see the other passport.

:o Thanks to everyone that replied. I thought this was the way it worked but as I said The Thai Embassy said to get a THai Visa.

Once again Thai Visa is a excellent source of information. Will be glad to be back in Muang Thai again after nearly two years.

Thanks Again,

LL
