Ethernet Connection Fails On Adsl Modem

Been using my Speedtouch modem (supplied by TOT) for almost two years without any problems.

Normally the following lights are lit: Power - Ethernet - DSL- Internet

Two days ago (my GF pulled the electricity cables out in fear of lighting) the Ethernet light doesn't come up so there should be a problem between the Realtek network card and the modem. Windows reports

'Network cable plugged out'.

First, support of TOT told me I had a problem with my Ethernet cable so rushed off to Pantip. Came back, same problem.

Then, yesterday two TOT technicians dropped by (and after trying their modem which worked perfectly) they concluded my Speedtouch had gone belly up.

So back to Pantip and bought myself a new modem (Linksys 2542B) modem. Connected the Ethernet cable and used the Linksys fast install CD-ROM).

Same problem! No LAN lights come on and the Install wizard says 'Please check your cable connection'.

Anyone has a clue?

Hard to say, but as it worked with the modem from the TOT guys not likely a problem on your PC's side.

Those LAN ports are actually the most fragile when thunderstorms are around, no need of a direct lightning hit the resulting static electricity of a lightning in the area can be enough to take them out.

Had two routers die on me that way already, completely working, only the WAN port died rendering them useless :)

Try your PC with any other netwrked equipment and see if they connect, or try your new modem on another PC to determine where exactly the problem is.

Another indicator of a fried LAN port is when the LAN actually seems to be connected OK (lights on), but there is only transmitted data and zero received data (or vice versa).

start with having a look on the port on your PC where you plug in the ethernet cable - should be an orange LED to indicate power and a green LED to indicate activity - it lights and flashes on connectivity and activity.

if you have power ( orange ) but no green then we should look at your config

Webfact:

1 -For now, I have no idea what it caused. As I said, after lighting begun, my GF (I was away and the modem was on) pulled all the electricity cables out of the sockets without turning the modem / PC off.

Lightning might have caused it (I live in a large apartment so not likely), a surge from removing the cable out of the socket might have caused it. Maybe just coincidence. Will update after Pantip

visit.

2 - My network card is on my motherboards, so can't move it.

3 - Cannot be the cable. The TOT technician modem worked on my cable. I have now three cables (yellow, blue and grey). I tired them all. No sucess.

Stumonster:

I refer to #2 ... there are no lights.

To summarize:

1 - The cable worked on the TOT technician modem. I tried three of them. No luck.

2 - Although my Speedtouch (old modem) Lan led refused to come on, it did come on the the technician's modem.

3 - The new bought modem (Linksys 2542B) doesn't show LAN led (there are 4 leds each for a port) either plus gives an error dialog when installing.

Using my phone modem now on GPRS until I visit Pantip again tomorrow .... slow, but better than nothing.

just to clarify - the TOT techs modem worked with your computers network port ?

and even with onboard ethernet I would expect their to be the 2 LEDS ( orange for power and green for activity ) - on the mainboard I looked at just then there was.

can you do a start --> run --> cmd

then at the prompt ping 127.0.0.1

this is a loopback test and you should get a reply for all 4 packets.

Stumonster, you're right. There are two leds, but at the angle I look they are covered by the plug. And yes, the TOT technician's modem worked instantly without them putting user/pass in.

Update:

Today I went to Pantip with my computer, old modem and new modem.

Miraculously the Ethernet connection (modem-> Lan) worked. Then he tested it on my computer and the Ethernet led came to life again. Even the old modem does work.

So 1,250 baht down the drain .. :)

Came home and hooked it up again. 100% success ... Got 1.42mbs on LA speedtest.net

Very strange, but a good end to the story.

Thanks again to those who replied.
