Does anyone know the reason for the new law preventing purchase of liquor between 2pm and 5pm, at least at superstores like Makro and Big-C?

I've been bitten twice now. :o

I wonder if many farangs and Thais understand the reasons for this law and think it is a reasonable one. How much more fuel will be wasted by people making extra trips to the store within the allowed hours, for instance?

I'm surprised this topic hasn't made it to the Forum before.

It's annoyed me too.

I've done a search on the Forum and cannot find any references so I guess Upcountry is the first to post on this subject.

The same restrictions are happening in Chonburi, Rayong and Pattaya.

Don't know why? :o

There has been several threads on thr forum about this, some restaurants in Bangkok are also restricting sales between 2pm and 5pm.

All the 7-11 Ive tried have sold to me with no problem, must be big TRT party sponsers.

You can't buy 1 bottle of beer in the supermarkets, but you can buy 2 cases ok.

This is the 5th time in four weeks that this topic has made it too the forum. No wonder I or my mate who posted a similar theme could get no sensible answers.

Thanks bartender100.

Can you post a link to those other threads?

I did a search but couldn't find anything.

I wouldn't want to re-hash old news, but I am intrigued as to when, why, and how.

:D

And... I tried the 2 case trick and was politely told to come back after 5:00pm.

No sale! :o

The reason is to stop school kids coming out of school from purchasing drink. And as all of you should know by now the amount of times it's been posted in SURIN it is Bars and Restaurants as well.

So they have to go to unlicenced roadside bars nears the schools now? Poor kids. :o

As usual, a fuss over nothing.

Your local store will sell you booze whenever you want it.

I went down south a week ago and a petrol station, with the signs up, still sold me beer at 3am.

The moral minority rule OK?

Bartender, and others,

Thanks for your input.

I bought a bottle of roi pipers from my neighbor at 1:55pm today, and I'm sure he'd sell it to me at 2:05pm. I'd rather drink Black or Red, regardless of economic concerns (vell, not always true - economy), but I like to buy 200 baht drinkable red wine at Big C when I go there - whatever the time.

How many school kids walk to the "back' of a superstore to buy a few bottles of red 'farang' wine? This law appears to be a blanket stupidity? I certainly hope it's a political move that will be removed after the election!

As I said in my original post, the cost of "oil" to make extra trips when the timing is wrong is probably more of a crime than the small number of malfeasancers that will successfully get around this dumb law.

The other day I heard some local Thais discuss the upcoming election. To my great and happy surprise, they discussed voting to make sure that TRT does not gain an absolute majority in government! Now, I'd sacrifice a CASE of healthy wine to see that work out!

Namaste.

Upcoutry (without a paddle, more or less) :o

All the local Mom and Pop stores still happy to sell a case of beer or two at any hour.

Latest up-date on the situation. I have just returned from a meeting with the Deputy Mayor,Deputy Governor and Police chief of Surin, and of course I brought up this subject. I was told that in Surin NO alcahol could be sold or even given away during the hours of 14.00-17.00 and midnight-11am

AS one would expect the whole thing is a MESS. In Sukothai you can buy booze 24/24 as far as I can tell. Went to Uttaradit. 16.30 in MK at Tesco. No booze. Guys at next table deeply into bottle of 100 Pipers. Oh, OK if you bring your own. Wife: 'By the time you bring the bill it will be gone 17.00'. MK: 'Oh OK but we will have to bring the beer in a glass not in a bottle'. Wise wife: 'Same Price?' Was. Looked around a fairly deserted MK..bottles lurking under quite a few tables...MK produce large mugs of Heinecken...Don't forget though Feb 6 you really probably cannot buy booze

I remember when this started the Bangkokpost put up a hotline number for people to "shop" shops selling out of hours,I just tried to find the artical, but cannot.

we was advised by the General to ring up the police if we knew of anywhere, but that is one thing I would never do. Also at the meeting I was informed that no drinks be sold, served or given away from 4th-6th feb. When I said was that to stop the falangs getting drunk and not voting I was told yes..................then they realised what they had said. :D:o

The last election day we had (local), a certain outlet was serving *chang* to farangs in metal water jugs. However, this was transferred to glasses for drinking.

I wonder how much attention will be given to the bars/alcohol outlets owned/operated/frquented by the local constabulary?

you know as anyway (paisan), but without erdinger I don't know if we are not delaying the trip, since my mate is right now just about crazy to get it!

Reminds me of drinking lager out of a tea cup, poured from a teapot, at 330am, in the cafe next door to Thursdays Discoteque in Kensington, London, England, after closing time , so not so unusual!!!!

Thank you Sir, very kind.

will either come saturday - depending on "wetness" tomorrow due to arrival of

friends from europe - or after sunday

" We are beer free (not free beer) from 18.00 sat evening until 18.00 sun evening"

Do I read this right, that 18.00 sat evening until 18.00 sun evening is "beer free", the other times "free beer"?? :D:o
