I only need 30 days because I fly back to the UK on July 1st, but my visa expires on June 3rd. I don't really want to have to do 2 trips to Burma, and international flights from Chiang Mai are expensive. The 2 day boat ride to Laos also seems a bit rough. Can I just go to the Thai immigration office in Chiang Mai like I would the Thai embassy in another country and get a stamp which could be activated when I cross the border? Alternatively, is there a consulate/embassy at the crossing to Mae Hong Son without having to go to Yangon?

Hope someone can help, search results have proved fruitless so far.

And the are no consulates on border. You don't say what kind of visa entry your on - if tourist entry of 60 days they can be extended 30 days at immigration - if not you would only get a 7 day extension at an immigration office.

Ah I see - I'm on 30 day visa on arrival. My 90 day visa from UK ran out and I went to Singapore to renew, but they had rediculous paperwork and extremely limited hours so I just left it and got a 30 on return. Didn't think about there not being an embassy near Mae Sai. Does anyone have experience of getting to Yangon from Chiang Mai, or is the more popular trip to Ventiene more feasible?

Thanks

Burma is not a good choice. You have to get a visa from the embassy in Bangkok first.

Vientiane is by far the best choice if you want to get double entry tourist visa.

Penang or KL are okay for single entry visas.

Have you considered Air Asia down to KL? A round trip the next few weeks can be had for less than 5000Bt. It does need an overnight, but the new Tune Hotel is right by the Low Cost Terminal - very cheap and comfortable enough. A lot easier than slogging to Laos or Myanmar IMO.
