Back To Basics

Featured Replies

Well, I couldn't resist it and have just received my "new" Contax G2 rangefinder-type camera comple with 3 superb Zeiss lenses 28/45/90mm.

I remember well when this model was launched. Did I yearn for it, but what a staggering cost in those days. Fortunately a lot more affordable now. 20 years I've waited for this camera and now it's here.

If you yearn for a Leica but price deters this is the one. Zeiss lenses equal to anything Leica can offer at 1/10th of the price.

But what a re-learning curve this has become. I'd forgotten just how much we rely on modern technology with our all singing Dslr's.

I guess there aren't too many of us old timers left who remember the days of non-SLR viewfinders.

Although it's auto-focus with 4fps shooting, the real use is manual everything and critical focusing.

Aligning the centre dots for critical focusing, will not auto-focus on horizons in landscape mode so calculate the DOF, can't auto-focus on repetitive pattern scenes either so again calculate, no through-the-lens viewing, manual focusing via a thumbwheel, set the aperture and check the DOF from "memory/experience". The camera automatically sets the shutter speed. Then eventually shoot!

Just as I did with my very first Kodak box camera all those years ago!

Absolutely brilliant. Makes you THINK about your image. The image is in constant view, no curtain blacking-out, no mirror slap and vibration, easily hand-holdable at 1/15th.

And the build quality - wow. Solid titanium body, quiet, purrs. Makes my 5D feel like a plastic toy.

I can't wait 'til the film arrives - FP4, Pan F, Tri-ex, HP5........and lots of Kodak E1000G slide.

Why did I do it - no idea. But I'm soooooo glad I did. :)

Results in due course.

Very nice! what did that set you back?

The set as shown above i.e. G2, 45mm, contax filter and flash was $450

The 28mm and 90mm were $200 each

Total including shipping was c $1,000

Just shot off a roll of negative film and what a learning curve. Sharp sure BUT exposure was crap, focusing even worse, composition great

I've got a lot to learn for sure :)

I grew up in the days K1000, FM2 and RB67.

Man do I feel old. Still got a good eye for composition but lack the patience.

Somehow the words "back to basics" do not ring true when married to the names Contax and Leica. :)
