Man Found Dead in Cemetery in Chiang Rai
Picture from responders. A 42-year-old man was found dead from a gunshot wound in a village cemetery in Chiang Rai province, close to the resting place of his mother’s ashes. The deceased had told relatives he was going to a hospital but never arrived. Authorities from Wiang Pa Pao Police Station were alerted on the morning of 3 March, to the discovery by Mr. Inchan Chai-in, the village head of Ban Pong Thewi in Wiang Pa Pao district. Officers, led by Police Colonel Narit Kerddee, arrived at the scene to investigate. The victim, identified as Mr. Somkit Jaisamoe, a resident of Ban Pong Thewi, was found with a fatal head wound caused by a homemade long-barrel gun. The weapon was still at the scene, with an empty casing lodged in the chamber. The force of the gunshot had caused severe injuries, scattering bone fragments and brain matter over a 20-metre radius. According to Mr. Inchan, the victim had been suffering from chronic health issues, including gout. He had been scheduled for a hospital visit the previous day but had failed to attend. The first person to discover the body was a fellow villager who had come to the cemetery to help clean the area in preparation for a funeral. Mr. Somkit’s younger brother, Mr. Somnuek, 31, provided further details, describing his brother as a hardworking man who had never married. He worked as a labourer and was the primary caregiver for their 71-year-old bedridden father. Before leaving home on the day of his death, Mr. Somkit had left his gold necklace and approximately 40,000 baht in cash at his father’s bedside. Police have collected evidence and taken statements from witnesses and family members. The preliminary investigation suggests the possibility of suicide, possibly linked to stress from personal and health-related issues. However, the body will undergo an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. If no foul play is suspected, the remains will be released to the family for funeral rites. If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai) or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). Please also contact your friends or relatives at this time if you have feelings of loneliness, stress or depression. Seek out help. -- 2025-03-04 -
