My wife gave birth to twins three weeks ago. Unfortunately she had hospital troubles before everything was in order. We live in Ban Chang and have been dealing with the very good hospital, Phyathai, in Si Racha which is about 50km west (I think). We had inquired about using Bangkok Rayong hospital which is also (supposedly) a very good hospital but only 30km in the other direction. In the end we stuck with Siracha. Unfortunately my wife went into labor unexpectedly early when I was away at work. Due to the emergency she decided to head to the nearer hospital in Rayong. However when she got there the staff went into a spin and floundered, not knowing what to do. They kept her in a room while the confabulated outside the door seeming trying to avoid tackling the task or reaching a conclusion. My wife pleaded with them to do something but they just couldn't reach a decision. In the end after 3 hours they opted to put her in an ambulance and send her the 80km+ to the hospital in Siracha. Other than more delays in Siracha regarding payment the children were delivered without trouble, as they should have been. My son was in an incubator for a few days that did concern me as to the effects of the delay, but he is fine now.

Maybe I am missing something but surely a hospital, especially a top end expensive one, should be able to deliver twin baby's.

This adds to me list of disappointing experiences in Thailand. Although I guess this is offset a little by the good experience at the other one.

Expensive does not gaurantee that the staff are any less moronic - as you are now aware.

Congratualations on the birth of your twins :)

Congratualations!

I hope you didn't pay for the 80 km ambulance ride.

I'm sure you're very thrilled with the twins but that shouldn't refrain you from (threatening to) sue(ing) them. Morons like that understand only one thing: money!

This could have gone very wrong and you should do something, only to protect the next one.

I wasn't sure things like that were possible in Thailand. I can't imagine trying to negotiate the Thai legal system. Thankfully me son is fine, but as you say this could have been a major disaster.

Having kids has brought the reality to light of just what conditions we have to live in here. Yesterday my son seemed a little out of sorts and I had no idea what I would do if he had something serious wrong with him. I would probably have to take him to Bangkok Rayong to consult another incompetent idiot.

We did pay the ambulance.

Thanks for the well wishes.

My daughter, who is now two years old, has inherited a problem from her mother: She has big problems taking a s***. When she was 3 months old, she hadn't tainted her pampers for 5 days. She also had a fewer of almost 40 degrees Celsius. My wife said : Never mind.

I litterally dragged the child and my wife into the car, and went to the nearest so called private hi-class hospital. The doctors were dilletants - part time working 'no want loosing face' ignorants (one of them even told me that she (my child, 3 months old) needed colon surgery). I told him to go back to Pattaya Walking Street.

After 2 days - 10000 Baht a day (approximately) - where they did nothing but wash my baby with cold towels and having her on a drip of some kind, I went for Vaseline and plastic gloves to try to stimulate her rectum/anus.

Finally I saw that nothing good would come out of this stay - so I checked 'bin' - almost 20000 Baht - and drunk drove to Khon Kaen Shrinakarin University Hospital. My daughter was in a very bad shape - we were admitted into a room with about 20 - 30 beds. I slept on the floor on newspapers (Thank you Bankok Post and Thai Rath), and the next day we got a private room. The doctors had serenity and the ability to explain that it was just a matter of time. They also said that the thing was quite normal - stay cool and it will pass.

After two weeks at this hospital my daughter was thriving and happy. The bill was about 8000 Baht (2500 for medical costs, and the rest for the room).

I've never been convinced that Bangkok Rayong is any better then Rayong Hospital, other than it is more expensive, and it is easier to communicate in English at Bangkok Rayong. I've never had a problem at Rayong Hospital, and I've had two extended stays there.

That must have been extremely traumatic. It seems to me the problem is the mix of avoiding loss of face, wanting to take your money, poor training and education, lack of responsibility and the whole mai pen rai attitude. It is very worrying to me having children here, especially young children. They don't even have midwifes or on call doctors here or proper local consultants. I guess that Thais just accept their fate and what happens happens.

How is your daughter now? Are you still in Thailand?

I've actually used Bangkok Rayong three times before this experience and never had a satisfactory result. Once I went there whilst feeling absolutely terrible but with no idea what was wrong with me. They put me through many tests and finally decided on sinus problems and gave me a pile of pills, for about 2500baht. A day later I was still writhing around in pain and discomfort. I dragged myself back and paid again for the proper pills :) The next time I went for a consultancy for minor plastic surgery. The surgeon came across as an amateur who would begrudgingly 'give it a go'. I didn't go back that time. Then we went to inquire about switching there for the birth. They seemed a little sheepish and said yes they could do it as they birthed twins once a couple of years ago. We were confused by their lack of commitment and opted to stick with the Siracha hospital. Of course I now know why they were none to keen, due to their incompetence.

In short I would not recommend them for anything at all. It's just unfortunate that they are so close to us that in the emergency my wife opted to use them.

It's funny because when I first went there I was amazed at the look of the place. It looks fantastically new and modern. I was enthusing about it and how this is how all hospitals should be. I now realize that the aesthetics of a hospital can in no way compensate for their complete lack of ability.

Clever man, Rich.

I once sat in a taxi in BKK talking to the chinese driver.

He said he didn't like t**** - they are nothing but apparence, the substance within doesn't matter.

My daughter is fine - I am still in Thailand - I have regrettably burned my bridges, and have nowhere else to go...

Try out Queen Sirikit Hospital when you need treatment next time.

Or even just take the twins over there for a general look see on the pretext of a check up and see how you feel about the degree of trust you might give them.

Hey, congratulations on your sweet babies...

Having little kids while in a western country is hard enough at times... we moved here when our boys were 5,7 and 9 so past all the freaky stuff.

Often things can be sorted without going to a doctor - here's a couple of ideas...

ear ache - crush some garlic and put into olive oil (but I guess most oils are fine) then warm up... once it has cooled to just a little above body temperature then drip gently into ear, lie on side for a while - this often clears ears up without having to go and get given anti biotics.

fever - always have some liquid paracetamol suitable for the age of your child on hand - give it to them, it helps and doesn't kill them. Don't worry about what they drink - whatever they will drink - give to them - even if you think sweet drinks are evil - it doesn't matter! Gently wipe with wet or dampened towel, but NOT really cold water - it HURTS them. Don't have a lot of blankets on them, just a thin sheet is fine.

tummy upset - runs or vomitting : I would keep my kids hydrated with whatever they would drink - cordial, coke - whatever... and often they would eat chippies (ie Lays) which don't hurt as they have salt... a good, tasty rehydrating drink is Sprite with a dash of salt in it - also ginger beer/ale...

Some kids like company when sick, others don't - you'll find out which pretty fast, but mostly when they're really little they just wanna be loved on and know that you're there.

A friend loaned me a book that you might be interested in buying - here's the details...

How to Raise a Healthy Child... in Spite of Your Doctor

by Robert S. Mendelsohn MD

ISBN 0-345-34276-3

Anyway, don't want to sound like I know it all, but you do learn as you go along... the other thing I learned was when to go to the doctor as often I would know that my son had an ear infection but if I went the first day, the doctor wouldn't see anything - I would wait a day or so, using the olive oil and garlic thing and if it cleared up - yay - if not, off to the doctor I'd go.

Here in Thailand, we have a couple of friends who are doctors from other countries and they are very helpful, so ask around and see if any people you know are trained and would be willing to give advise to you.

So, there ya go, all the best with your lovely babies. :):D

Is this hospital part of the Bangkok Hospital chain of hospitals? if it is then it's best to avoid them. Been reading lots of negative reviews about this hospital chain of late... and they charge thousands of Bahts for simple things that would cost a fraction at other hospitals. Not a problem if you got insurance I suppose...

My 2 cents

We went to Sirikit a month or so before the twins were due, just to see what the place was like and maybe meet those in the relevant department in case we needed them in an emergency. We were there for an hour or so and didn't get anywhere. There were a dozen staff in the department and none of them seemed very enthusiastic to help us or answer simple questions. We gave up in the end.

After the birth my wife had problems healing from the CS. We were recommended to go to Sirikit to have the wound cleaned daily in between weekly visits to our main hospital. We did this, but my wife found it very uncomfortable in using them. They made it plane that they resented her using the other private hospital for the birth and asked her why she didn't go back there! The place was a complete mess and my wife was concerned at catching something whilst there. She said the room she was in was like a toilet. Still, nothing went wrong and we used them for four days and saved a lot of time and money. Plus after the first two days their attitude thawed a little.
