There's Google Maps for Mobile (GMM), but this is not a navigator per se. It shows your location on a Google Map on your phone.

Another nice thing, an add-on to GMM, is Google Latitude. With this, you can allow friends to see your location on their own mobile phones or on their PCs at home. If you need privacy at certain times, you can always temporarily or permanently disable some or all friends' ability to see your location.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Just checked http://www.google.com/latitude Looks like Thailand is not one of the supported countries.

There are a couple of GPS supported iPhone apps that work in Thailand. AroundMe will attempt to find certain points of interest based on your location, but it's not very complete for Thailand.

BuUuk is a restaurant finder that will locate Bangkok restaurants for you based on your location. They have quite a few restaurant listings there, and you can even enter your own reviews.

I haven't seen a lot of GPS supported apps specific to Thailand. Along the lines of Google Latitude, there are a couple of apps that will allow you to track yourself via a web page, and that can be viewed by others if you provide them the link. Careful though, during those post-office meetings down along Soi 21 if you provide a link to the missus and leave the tracking application running :) Check out Navizon or Firepin. Navizon is currently broken for iPhone 3.0.

I saw Google Latitude being used in Thailand when I was there last December. To load it, if your phone model supports Google Maps for Mobile, I understand you have to use your phone’s browser to go to google.com/latitude and follow the instructions from there.

I did, using Safari on my iPhone. A page came back saying "coming soon". Also, if you visit the site from your computer, Thailand is not in the list of countries in the drop down menu.

I saw a Google Maps for Mobile team member post on ThaiVisa about a year ago but cannot remember who it was and if it would actually answer the question. Probably not, because Google Latitude is very new. I will try and find that old topic.

I found it. This is the topic:

Two members posted they were using Google Latitude in Thailand. In post #12 a member, webfact, gives information how to load it on your mobile phone. Hope this helps. I am going to invite webfact to look at this topic, so if you need further help please post here to describe your problem in more detail.

This might give you the answer

http://www.9to5mac.com/iphone-google-latitude

I read somewhere Latitude will come up with the next 3.o model integrated!

supported phones which ae not listed in the country drop down list must install this way

Use your phones web browser and type http://google.com/latitude

It then will download and install the program to your phone.

I'm still waiting to see whether anyone has successfully installed Google Latitude in Thailand. From a desktop browser, Thailand is not in the drop down list. When going to the link from my iPhone browser, I just get "Coming Soon".

Is their an Iphone app that lets you create your own GPS maps?

Until there is I am sticking with OziExplorer for WM. I've got Garmin XT, Google Maps and Google Lat on the same phone and they are next to useless for my needs.

I don’t understand what you mean with creating your own GPS map.

Basically what programs like ArcGIS or more simply OziExp can do. With latter one can just stick any image of a map (be it a scanned jpg or a Google Earth mozaic of an entire country) in the software and after geotagging it can plot movements on screen and create move to waypoints. Great for customized maps that the likes of Garmin and proprietary formats don't allow. Also work well for world regions where there is no good base map in the proprietry format of the likes of Garmin or internet access on the go for Google Maps apps. There are a lot of prgrasm out there that can creat GoogleEarth moziacs with these kind of prgrams as well and can be used offline thus saving connect time fees. I am not aware of any Iphone app enabling this and besides think it would be against the Iphone ethic that relies on paid apps and music downloads?

Have a look at Offmaps in the iTunes App Store. It downloads maps when you are online and saves them for later offline use. You can also create and save routes for offline use.

Anyone tried Mobile Maps SE Asia (voice guided) from the app store?

There's a pretty hefty charge of $79.99

Their website looks great and it appears to have almost all of the POI's and details that are on my Garmin.

If anyone has this app, please post what you think of the cost / benefit and is it Better / worse / same as Garmin or similar.

Aloha

Looks a move in the direction so save online connect fees esp when roaming which I always avoid. I was thinking it still cannot compete with ability to use home made maps, maps created on ones own PC using likes of ArcGIS, AutoCAD etc so that any kind of Point Of Interest, Region Of Interest, Statistics of Interest etc that I have been using for yrs on WM hand phones and see myself moving around real time on such maps. Perhaps the need is somewhat more specialized than the mass market iPhone needs tho.

Just installed on my iPhone (original model running 3.0 firmware). Works fine, also works on the desktop.

There are a couple of comments about this App elsewhere on TV.

I have bought it and consider it very good - better than Garmin in fact but not as good as Tom Tom (not available in Asia.)

There appears to be a Sygic Thailand (which may only be available from the Thai store) and maybe better value for money if you only want the App for Thailand.

I am not sure which Garmin you have so it is difficult to compare. The one I had was very car based so if you went to a restaurant adding a POI was fiddly. If the GPS is on your iphone you can add it at anytime.

If you are happy with your Garmin then there probably is no great reason to upgrade. If you dont have a good GPS system then the Sygic is excellent value.

Check out Wikimap in the App Store. It allows users to save open street maps (osm) for offline map navigation and browsing. It allows allows creation of new waypoints and uploading of pictures which are automatically shared to other Wikimap users.

Hi All,

Anyone have a GMDL map version of Bangkok,Links I found online are no good. I have Phuket, Chiang Mai, Singapore. However, have had no luck making, or finding bangkok map

I am using in offline maps.

i.e MapTiles.sqlitedb

Thnx...

I've got the sygic, i used it to navigate round chiang mai. It was really good actually, the only place it falls down where you are trying to search for something that you aren't quite sure where it is and its a bit too far away to be picked up on the "near me" search - which can take foreever if you are searching in downtown bangkok. I keep it on the phone as i never know when i'll be expected to go somewhere i'm not sure of.

At $80 i think its cheaper than other GPS alternatives. THis does have alot of POIs and i am quite happy with it to be honest.

Cheers...
