Durian is often noted as an aphrodisiac, perhaps something is triggered by its enchanting smell.

For the DURIAN EATERS ONLY among us, do you find it to be so, or not?

This poll in honor of CHEAP durian eating season. Hurrah!

There is no choice for non durian eaters. This is intentional because the poll is not about whether people eat durian or not ...

The first time I smelled durian I was really put off by the highly pungent smell - whew! But then I held my nose (literally) and took a bite and was surprised to discover the taste was different from the smell, and very good. I've been eating durian ever since.

Like the saying goes, "If you get past the smell, you've got it licked! :) (No further comments on that :D:D )

No, it is not an aphrodisiac for me, and I really don't understand why people go nuts over it. I like it, but prefer mango or mangosteen.

It is good when I'm only eating fruits and vegetables as it fills you up and supplies good fats to the body.

Agreed. I vastly prefer mango and mangosteen. Funny, because all my life in the states I never even eaten one mango or one mangosteen! Had never even seen a mangosteen, and certainly never durian, really an odd looking thing.

BTW, one important thing about durian I've read before somewhere on TV: Supposedly it is a proven anti-cancer food. Something about preventing cell division. But the down side may be it's cholestrol, which is high, but there is some debate about if it is the bad or the good cholestrol type. Interested readers may wish to google for more information, especially somebody fighting cancer. I worry a little because I have some coronary heart disease and I wouldn't want to trade a possible threat of cancer for increased coronary artery buildup. For me moot however because when not in harvest durian is quite expensive, even in Chanthaburi where they grow everywhere, so my budget doesn't allow many of these fruit.

I actually LOVE durian, even more so than mangosteen or rambutan. But I have never considered it to be an aphrodisiac! Maybe I'm not "sensitive" enough?

Speaking of durian, I thought I was pretty "expert" in terms of picking, and distinguishing between Mongthon, Chanee, etc..

But I recently tried a small-sized "Chanee-looking" durian called "Kadoom"--it was heavenly! The meat was SO much more fragrant than even Mongthon, apparently most come from Chantaburi..can somebody provide some insight into this "new favorite" of mine??

I always thought Mongthon was the King, but after eating Kadoom, I'm not so sure...

I am bit surprised that more have not noticed the aphrodisiac effect of the King of Fruits.

When the durians fall, the sarongs fly up, goes a Malay saying.

About the so called bad small:

"But as you get to appreciate durian, the smell is not offensive at all. It's attractive. It makes you drool like a mastiff."

Not sure about aphrodisiac properties, but I have been told by numerous Thais that it is good for the health, but it can be dangerous if eaten when drinking alcohol.

Maybe raises the blood pressure?

Durian raises the body temperature. Whiskey does too. Thailand is hot. So three hots, not so good. I don't think there is much of a problem with a moderate portion of durian and a couple of drinks. Thais are phobic about this though. As far as the cost, in the current season, durian is very cheap! Time to indulge is NOW.

I agree with the phobic Thai reaction, but what's in it that makes the body temperature increase? Surely not alcohol?

I don't know what is in durian that makes people hotter, but I have read that it does have that effect, and I feel that when I eat a good portion. I can understand why people think it is a bad mix with whiskey but I doubt moderate amounts of both would kill very many people.

I found the WIKI description quite interesting . 'its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock'

Durian fruit contains a high amount of sugar, vitamin C, potassium, and the serotonergic amino acid tryptophan and is a good source of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. It is recommended as a good source of raw fats by several raw food advocates, while others classify it as a high-glycemic or high-fat food, recommending to minimise its consumption.

I guess the sugar gives the heated effect and keeps the blood pumping,

Jingthing, I think that I have found the answer. Maybe i just have too much time on my hands.

Again Wiki.

The Javanese believe durian to have aphrodisiac qualities, and impose a set of rules on what may or may not be consumed with it or shortly thereafter. A saying in Indonesian, durian jatuh sarung naik, meaning "the durians fall and the sarongs come up", refers to this belief. The warnings against the supposed lecherous quality of this fruit soon spread to the West — the Swedenborgian philosopher Herman Vetterling commented on so-called "erotic properties" of the durian in the early 20th century.

Isnt the whole hot food/cold food thing Persian in origin and with no basis in fact whatsoever? I've had a number of Iranians expound forever on this thing and tell you what is hot and what is cold and the whole thing is just a useless load of crap. It has nothing to do with raising your body temperature. Alcohol, by the way, lowers your body temperature so a given ambient temperature feels warmer.

Is it an aphrodisiac. I had some today while out on a walk because my girlfriend doesnt like it when I eat it in the house. I noticed that I was sexually attracted to almost every young woman that I saw. And when I came home, my girlfriend looked really good as well. Maybe though it is not the durian and I am just a perv.

I love durian (Mon Thong variety is best, doesn't pong either) but I do not find it aphrodisiac - I am so stuffed after eating it that I usually fall asleep holding my swollen belly.

Sure, but what's goin' on when you wake up? That's what I'm talkin' about ...
