Divers find no bodies in mystery container

CHON BURI: -- A tiny underwater camera, slipped through a hole into a mysterious container on the seabed off Chon Buri's Sattahip district yesterday, found the container empty, with no skulls or toxins as feared.

Following a fishing boats' discovery of eight sealed containers under the sea, the government assigned Central Institute of Forensic Science director Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan to work with the Royal Thai Navy to find what was inside.

Yesterday a diving team, with media members and officials went to Chong Sam San, eight sea miles off the Sam San port to inspect one container.

The first diving team went down with a dosimeter and detected no radiation harmful to humans. A second diving team followed to record the inspection with an underwater camera.

The container was lying sideways on the sandy seabed some 20 meters below, with a 50cmwide squareshaped hole. The camera slipped into the hole found a ladder inside, suggesting it was a containerturnedoffice space. The officials also collected water samples from inside the container through a syringe, and sand samples for further testing.

After the inspection, Porntip met local residents at the Thai Island and Sea Natural History Museum to tell them of the team's procedure and progress. Tambon Sam San residents had feared the containers might have toxins and the leaks would affect their vocations.

Porntip said she wanted opinion from the people, especially those in fishing, to make the operation more efficient, cheaper and safer.

She said they had problems finding the containers and called in the First Navy Area Command to collect information, especially from fishing boats with modern equipment.

Captain Panom Kuanpradit, deputy director of the command's Operations Department, said attempts to locate the underwater containers were difficult and minesweeper boats were sent to search for them. Fishing boats were asked to note the location and alert the command or the Fishery Department's radio communication centre if they spotted anything suspicious.

Tambon Sam San kamnan Pramote Thowsakul said the government had spent large sums to determine what was inside the containers - a good thing because local people would no longer wonder about them. He said they had feared the containers might contain toxins and didn't support the idea of drilling them open for fear of dangerous leaks into the seawater. Marine life, the fishing business and tourism would be affected, he added.

Oh, boy, here I go again. I might be wrong, but I thought that ocean water dissolved bones. I am not trying to feed the conspiracy theorists, but I wouldn't expect to find any bodies. That said, other things might remain, such as rings, parts of watches, well-tanned leather etc.

:) WOW They spent 500,000. Baht to cut a hole and look into it !!! I have all the equipment to do the same job and I would have only of charge them 1/8 of that !!! "OH" maybe not I forgot they had to remove the body's out first then take the pictures !!! Their should have been a private independent dive company there to witness EVERYTHING !!! WE ALL KNOW HOW THE THAI GOVERMENT LIKE TO COVER UP THINGS TO SAVE FACE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why not blame teh US government for burying remains of aliens discovered in area 51?

Bodies of victims of 92 uprising - what idiot came up with that idea in the first place? Comlpetely delusional.

Why would ocean water dissolve bones?

And this was a sealed container, not a beach where some parts would get continuously grinded by sand and stones...

And this was a sealed container, not a beach where some parts would get continuously grinded by sand and stones...

Earlier report from TANN News stated:

During the examination, they were able to take underwater photographs, which revealed that there are no skeletons in the container, except shells and those of three Nurse Sharks. The team was also able to take a sample of silt from around the container to determine if there were toxic substances, even so there was a group of sharks nearby

It may have been a sealed container when it was dumped 20 years ago, but it doesn't sound as though it was sealed when they went to investigate.

Did anyone really expect the authorities to find anything?

Did you really expect a current Thai government to announce to the world that a recent Thai government was guilty of mass murder?

This was conducted by the ministry of sweeping things under the rug

Of course it's delusional to expect a few containers laying on sand and less than 20m deep, visible to fishermen, on the busiest shipping lane, to hide remains of the victims of a twenty year old massacre.

Ofcourse, but that buffer-time before the containers broke would still protect the bodies from being disintegrated by being sand-blastered and grinded against rocks. The skeleton remains of the sharks would infact support that theory.

The divers inspected 1 container, and found no bodies or toxic product. What about the other 7 containers? :)

One container at a time, TIT it takes time to get things done. Besides they have yet to clear the contents of the remaining 7 :D

It was odd to come read about the containers only to see a 'Storage Container" advert at the top of the page. Thankfully there were no bodies found as that would have made the advert extremely inappropriate. :)

If they were using a 'tiny' camera, why make a 50cm wide hole? (unless they needed it that wide to remove the bodies prior to the camera inspection.....)

Simon

It said that the container was FOUND there with a 50cm hole already in it.

Doesn't it seem a little strange to anyone that

a) there was already a pre-cut hole in the side of the container

:) that no independent investigation was launched into the case. instead, NAVY DIVERS (note that if such containers ever held bodies, it would have been the navy who dropped them off) were send down to "assist".

c) a camera was inserted into a 50 cm hole instead of a human being sent in there to sift amongst the sand, despite no evidence of toxic waste being discovered

d) NONE OF THE OTHER CONTAINERS WERE OPENED. Just the one with the hole already conveniently cut into it.

If it turns out that this was a coverup (which we wouldn't find out before a change of government) then its the worst one in history.

exactly,do you think is easy to find a cheap storage these days? give them some time men, they really don't want to be caught twice for the same problem.... :D and did anyone yet claim that the previous human remains that have been found were just overweight tunas? probably they didn't feel the need of it as who dares to put in doubt the words of state officials?

".....Chon Buri's Samaesan district chief Pramote Towsakul said local people had in the past discovered human skulls in sunken containers but were too scared to report to the police...."
