^^ ... why use 100 words ... when a 1,000 words woud do!

But I have to agree with SC ... there are the gems of answers in there ... along with a lot of polish.

The scrum, in league, is effectively just a way of restarting the game after a team makes a mistake, and keeps the forwards in one place to give the backs more space to run about for a moment.
the tackle ... The two or three fellas lying on top of him hold him down for just a moment - as long a moment as they can get away with so that their team mates can get back on side. ... Meanwhile the tackled player flops ... in order to give the impression to the referee that he wants to get up and is being prevented from doing so, in the vain hope of being awarded a penalty

... but yours was more fun to read ... and I am sure, to write ... thumbsup.gif

Well, I had my trusty tiger at my side, and I set off for the commentary of Wire - Rovers, or FC v St Helens, if I could not find that... but I searched to no avail, as the games are tomorrow...

So instead, I am sat in front of the TV to watch a repeat of the match from Headingley against Wigan, with James Child in charge

When I was a kid they had union style scrums, but like in union they used to have to be re-set several times and often ended in penalties for collapsing. So now they are largely uncontested, though sometimes they go against the feed. Scrummaging is a specialist skill that union forwards have to practice and can be dangerous. League positions are more generic. League is more about runnng/tackling/passing and has had the old fashioned forward play/drudgery taken out to make it visually more interesting.

As said before, the guy who was tackled wants to get up asap, preferably before the defence had got back the 10m, and wants to be seen making the effort.

Incidentally, there are 2 rival league competitions in the US.. Have a look for AMNR and USARL on youtube.

My apologies for the late start; bit of a problem on the pie front, down at Sids'. Luckily the Imam wasn't there, or I'd have never got away.

Anyway, at New Craven Park, Hull KR 6 - 22 Warrington. A lot of stoppage time, I don't know what for - 6 minutes.

and on the other side of town, the BBC tell me its Hull FC 6 - 12 St Helens... let's hope FC can pull something back (oo -err can I say that?) in the second half.

Yo-ho! and at the Oranges, Widnes are leading Huddersfield 16-12

SC

EDIT: Nine minutes into the second half, all played in the Warrington half, and Dobson is over for Rovers' second try -

HKR 12 - 22 WAR and the commentary is off to Rochdale for the Hornets - Workington game for a moment...

And a roar goes up as Hull KR score again 12 minutes into the second haf!

And its all Hull KR in the second half. Warirington come forward - a David Hodgeson interception but he;s closed down, and Warrington drop out from under the posts 22-16 ahead...

And Craig Hall dummies, charges through and scores beneath the posts; surely the conversion will go over from square in front of the posts...

SC

Edit: Elsewhere, Hull FC have leveled with St Helens 16 apiece, and Widnes hang onto a 2 point margin over Hudderfield

Eleven minutes to go at New Craven Park...

and its all Yorkshire as Hull squeeze ahead, and Huddersfield score to take the lead...

At New Craven Park, both sides see drop goal attempts go wide, 22 - all the impetus with Hull KR...

And a Michael Dobson drop goal gives Hull KR the lead for the first time with two minutes to go... Hull KR 23 - 22 Warrington "and this has been a horror show from Tony Smith's men in the second half"

"A penalty against Hull KR and this is the last chance saloon for Warrington..."

and Ben Westwood knocks on, and that may be the last time that Warrington get their hands on the ball. The commentator's stop watch says 'time added on' ... "and here's Bret Hodgeson, Gareth Carvel at half way, too far for Lee Briers, right on half way... Hull KR 23 - 22 Warrington, still too far for Briers, O Brien thought he could see a gap but it wasn't - drop goal attempt for Lee Briers but he's pulled it wide... a look at the watch tells us we've had two minutes beyond the forty...

and the whistle goes to signify a magnificient Hull Kingston Rovers victory, Warrington have been beaten sensationally at New Craven Park 23 - 22 after Warrington let 22 - 6 at half time

SC

EDIT: And Widnes have pulled it back (oo err) to finish 26 - 22 victorious over visitors Huddersfield, and the latest score for Hull FC is Hull 18 - 16 St Helens... and St Helens pull back a penalty to level the scores before the final hooter...18 apiece.

You know SC ... there is a bit of a groundswell of discontent amongst some the UK Footie Clubs because of recently decreased attendances.

In a recent poll conducted into the phenomenon, one of the reasons sited was “why pay good money to go to the game when you can simply jump on TVF and read StreetCowboy's blow by blow description ... with his insightful commentary ... it's almost better then being at the game”!

The commentary is really aimed at the overseas market that does not have the kind blessing of satellite TV - whether Astro or Sky, and can neither get to the games nor see them on TV; a situation I found myself in, for some years. In the end, I had to arrange a job of work in Dubai to see Warrington in the Challenge cup Final...

I'm particularly proud of the Malaysia - Thailand match report, which really was a cracking game, building as it did to a spectacular finish. I was reminded of the 2010 Arabian Gulf - Korea game, to avoid relegation to Division 1...

Arabian Gulf were leading by six or seven points, but Korea were finishing the stronger. they pressured the Gulf line as the final hooter drew near; the hooter went, and it looked like Korea must score... and so they did, but heroic defending by the Arabian Gulf forced them right to the corner flag, and the conversion went wide. A victory in their last ever game as the Arabian Gulf secured a place in the Top Five for thier successors UAE.

The warm-up game was a friendly test between Lebanon and Jordan - a closer affair than the relegation thrashing that Iran handed to China on Saturday.

I'm a little nervous that Bonobo is following this thread now, and off-topic digressions are bound to get stamped on with a heavy boot; serves me rtight for lying offside, I suppose, but I expect I'll get another ten yards for this backchat...

SC

EDIT: I'm also particularly proud of the Northern League explanation a few pages up; I'm sure you can imagine me chortling away as I wrote it...

EDIT: I'm also particularly proud that if you search on Google for "Hyoomilliayashun" it comes straight to the report of Warrington - Wigan last season to clinch the league leaders' shield; so long as you spell Hyoomilliayashun right - and I am not sure that I have, here - a quick check on Google tells me there's only one L in 'hyoomiliayashun'

I wonder if the "big silvery salmon" refers to your previous Avatar of the BTS SkyTrain?

Actually I had my sperm count done late last year and the Doctor and I agreed that it was a useful description of them.

10 million, just lying there like a Farang by the pool at 10am after a big night out ... barely a movement.

10 million like a fish that you just stepped on it's head ... just flapping about but going no where ... maybe the same a tackled football player trying to get up and inducing a penalty.

And the remaining 10 million swimming for that Gold Medal at the London Olympics.

Considering the amount of water about and the rain, does Scotland have a swimmer in medal contention at the upcoming games?

OH ... just so I don't have to get my coat and this stays on topic ... is Rugby League, Live or otherwise, part of this years Olympics?

I thought the comment about a Scottish swimmer was with respect to this evening in Newcastle...

And still OT; Sevens will be in the Olympics from 2016 - that'll be Brazil, won't it?

Although the Olympic Committee has recognised rugby league as a sport, I believe. Though not one that they are interested in.

Looking forward to this weekend, the highlight is

Friday 20:00 BST Warrington v Leeds

Its live on Astro, and repeated throughout the weekend; since its a non-working weekend I might have an early night and get up (so to speak) to watch it.

Maybe I'll take a trip down to Cold Storage to stock up on Irn Bru for the game...

Next weekend is a league international weekend in the Northern Hemisphere, with the English taking on the Exiles, and Wales meeting France.

Does anyone know if Scotland and Ireland are playing?

I think Ireland is playing the All Blacks in New Zealand. At least I saw an advertisement for the match on the television, and I think it was for this weekend.

Ah - that's in the 'other code'; its confusing, having overlapping International weeks...

The league internationals are much lower-key affairs, and the Australians (and NZ teams) are in the middle of their domestic season.

Straying off-topic; I'm expecting the Irish to get a bit of a thumping by the All-Blacks, who maybe have something to prove after just scraping home against the French in the World Cup

I was momentarily distracted at the kick-off, and I missed the first score - Trent Waterhouse after a Rile break and a kick back into the middle and within the first minute, first try to Warrington on the newly-laid turf at the Halliwell Jones.

Its tipping down rain here as well, by the way

Warrington 6 - 0 Leeds

Oh my word - a big hit on from Warrington's second row turns over possession and its down the left hand side for a second try.

"... and McDermott's side are in a big hole" - trailing by 12 points within the first five minutes

and Lee Briers kicks through, Brent Webb caught off balance and he's tackled and bundled into his own goal; Warrington get it back and bring it over the 20 metre line; its slippery underfoot. A kick through, Leeds palm it dead and kick out again from under the sticks...

Warrington camp on the Leeds line for two or three tackles, then on the fifth tackle back to Lee briers, who stabs it through with his boot and Gareth O Brien picks it up and puts it down under the posts Warrington 18 - 0 Leeds in fifteen minutes

Penalty to Leeds for crossing gives them their first attacking opportunity; Sinfield kicks through, Warrington block - six more tackles to Leeds. Lunt reaches for the line, the ball goes loose, the referee goes upstairs... there's daylight between the fingers and the ball - scrum to Warrington...

And Warrington take it back up the park; Lee Briers kicks over - the only man defending at the posts is the referee, Gareth O Brien runs 25 metres to ground the ball with his foot millimetres off the ground over the line Warrington 24 - 0 Leeds and its still tipping down stair-rods, with the wind in Warrington's favour in this first half

and Leeds have not had a chance to get into the game but now they bring it back... they're into the Warrington half. Tackle count restarted for a Warrinton hand... up to the 30 metre line... 20 metre line 5th tackle kicks through and Brett Hodgeson claims it. An early kick from Lee Briers puts Leeds back in their own half, and in the conditions, it would be easy for the ball to slip out of Leeds grasp, like a soapy fish... But delaney breaks and they're up to the Warrington 30 again. but the Warrington defence is tight... up to the 20... and a knock-on into Joel Monaghan's waiting arms.

O'Brien breaks through a gap in the Leeds defence, feeds Chris Reilly and he scores under the posts 30 - 0

Jamie Jones Buchanan pushes down the right flank; Sinfield kicks across but its picked up by Warrington

Warrington break - another try coming but Ryan Hall pulls him down and knocks the ball from his hand; Leeds come back... up to the Warrington 30... but no way through. 5th tackle, precision kick through, Monaghan gets to the ball first and grounds it behind his own line. another set of six to Leeds...and a quick play-the-ball from fifteen metres on the fourth tackle sees Sinfield go over, but he's hurt as the tackle comes in - but he's back on his feet to convert his own try. WAR 30 - 6 LEE

And Leeds break on the rigth wing with Jones-Bishop, and he wins a penalty for slowing the play down. They throw it wide but a stab through is picked up by Warrington.

A wild pass sees Warrington break, out to the right wing, brought down; penalty for slowing down, Warrington presure the Leeds line, kick through - into the defender's arms, and as Leeds bring the ball back upfield the hooter goes for oranges WAR 30 - 6 LEE

There's ice hockey on the other channel; now that would be madness.

"and he brings it up the ice, he passes, he shoots ... where's it gone? they're all skating round mad - where's the puck? CRASH! Whoosh! what's going on here? Look - there it is; its in the net. How long has it been there, then?"

Madness!

EDIT: Wakefield playng Sunday, hosting Hull - Smokie's team

This is the only game on Astro (repeated about four times over the weekend, until Monday night (Tuesday morning) - Huddersfield - Hull KR

And the second half gets underway; Warrington give away a penalty, but Sinfield doesn't find touch.

Elsewhere, Saints restarted the second half 28-0 against Bradford

but back to the Halliwell Jones, where Ben Harrison has kicked the ball forward in the ruck to give Leeds a scrum around the Warrington 30. Burrow breaks from the base of the scrum and "Warrington found wanting in defence for the first time tonight" and "will Warrington be worrying about what happened at Hull KR last week?" (Warrington gave away 17 unanswered points in the second half to lose a 6 - 22 lead, and at the final whistle, fell behind 23 - 22...)

And Leeds are bringing the ball forward - a long kick through. Hodgeson pulls up limping and Stefan Ratchford comes onto the field.

Warrington testing the Leeds line, spinning it wide, a kick across from left to right, but Leeds field the ball and bring it forward, tackle by tackle. Compliments from the commentary team on the new turf - 'money well spent'. A long kick, Warrington run it out, to Monagahn, pulled down. Inside the 20 m line. Morley brought down 5 m in front of the posts, back, kicked, the ball bobbles around, Burrows kicks at it, Mickey Higham can't get a hand on the ball as he dives on it - 20 metre restart to Leeds

And a huge tackle by Ben Westwood has Kirke stretched out cold and the medical staff are there within seconds, an accidental clash of heads after the tackle impact.

Whilst Kirke is eased onto a stretcher, St helens 50 - 0 Bradford at Langtee Park

And Warrington bring it forward from the ensuing scrum... Ratchford twists, looking for a way through that's not there.

9 m in front of the Leeds posts, and a kick through goes dead

Leeds have not been using the wind... a kick over is half charged down, Leeds kick through, and its fielded by Warrignton who bring it back up to their 30 m line.

Sinfield tries a kick over, but he misdrops the ball and doesn't get his boot to it; from the ensuing scrum, Warrington come forward again - 59 minutes; Warrington 30 - 12 Leeds...

Burrow ducks into a flailing arm to claim a high tackle, Leeds spin the ball wide, they're making ground into the defence, but akick through goes dead... and Warrington win a penalty for holding down at the ruck... and Briers takes a 1 point drop goal, just to see if the score board is still working...

And Warrington keep the pressure up, but at the drop out, Sinfield kicks the ball off Joel Monaghan's hands and through his legs, and over the touch line...Leeds take the ball up... 12 minutes to go, Leeds need to score four times - three times as Burrows goes over just to the left of the posts from a fifty metre break started by Delaney. 31 - 18, and Leeds are in a hurry with 11 minutes remaining.

And a great kickoff touched by Leeds before it goes into touch in the corner. Again Warrinton pressure the Leeds line...Atkins charges for the line and he wins a penalty for pushing and shoving at the play-the-ball. Six more, from the ten metre line. Its spun wide through the hands outht e lines, and back - a dummy off load but Ryan atkins veers to over the line and Ben Thaler points at the touchdown... surely that will calm the Warrington nerves

Seven minutes to go... 19 points the difference

And a daft off-load (or maybe it was knocked out in the tackle) sees Warrington take the ball back and work it upfield again

Znd Warrington pin Leeds back in their own 20; a kick charged down... and then Leeds break - into the Warrington half. A cross-field Sinfield kick is taken by Monaghan, winning a penalty as well - for taken in the air, or for the man coming in from the side being taken out?

One minute to go... Warrington still coming forward the kick through is knocked back, Carvell is held up on the line. The Hooter goes but the touch judge is on..." Go Away!" says Ben Thaler to the players. Penalty Warrington. "Go over there!" and Warrington take the kick at goal - missed!

Warrington 37 - 18 Leeds

and at Langtee Park, St Helens 54 - 0 Bradford

and I'm off to bed with the distressing realisation that next Saturday (Scotland Fiji, 10 am KL) is a working Saturday...

And you join us 35 minutes into the Catalans Wigan game 8 - 10 to Wigan, but they're looking tired. Sam Tomkins takes a quick penalty, he's brought down and another penalty right in front of the posts. Desperate defensive effort...OUT TO CHARNLEY WHO'S IN AT THE CORNER and Wigan Warriors score right on the half-time siren.

SC

Edit: just while we're waiting for the South Africa - England test, like. Though we may also be switching to the Broncos - Vikings game as well...

In the second half - Josh Charnley kicks another two points to stretch the lead to 16 - 8; could this be the Catalans' first home defeat this season? as the camera focusses on the thousands of Wigan fans (so I'm told - I'm watching on the wireless...)

and Widnes take the lead in London... 0 - 6

Its a sunny, sultry day here in Montpelier... for all I know

And another "brilliant score for Carmont to push them out to a 20 points to 8 advantage..." in a well-built try also involving Sean O'Loughlin and Josh Charnley

Pressure from the Catalans, held out with tremendous defence from Wigan

while London have equalised...

Oh my word - Carmont goes in for his second try, and Wigan are leading Catalan Dragons 24 - 8 in Montpelier "and that should seal the victory... Charnley's goal kicking not been fantastic but ...he's missed again; this is an increasing problem for Wigan"

SC

Catalan dragons catch Wigan napping - they're looking a bit weary and 24 - 14, Catalans take the conversion quickly...

and Sam Tomkins seals it for Wigan! Try no. 6 for the Warriors, Tomkins takes the conversion 30 - 14

with about seven minutes to go; Catalans' first defeat at home (near home, anyway).

and London have gone 12 - 6 ahead at the Stoop

Damien Blanche gets to within half a metre of the line...

I'm not really paying attention... Jack Hughes rounds off the afternoon with the seventh try for Wigan. Its been anything but easy, though... its been a hot, sultry afternoon, "and I can't imagine that Trent Robinson has been happy with his team this afternoon"

And its half time at the Stoop, 12 points apiece for Broncos - Vikings

And Cameron Phelps strolls in for the first try of the second half to put Widnes back in the lead "the gap opened up like the parting of the Red Sea"

Three Widnes tries from three Widnes attacks Broncos 12 - 18 Vikings

and in the other code, South Africa arer kicking off...

And London has scored after a try-saving tackle by Cameron Phelps was followed by a penalty for an illegal steal.

18 - 18 in the bottom-of-the-table clash

" and Rinaldi thinks he sees a gap, and its a big one, but Widnes salvage a drop-out under the sticks after a finger-tip tackle by Paddy Flynn"

Meanwhile, five thousand miles away, England go 0 - 3 ahead in the other code

(5907 miles, apparently)

Sorry, chaps, I wasn't paying attention as Widnes cross the line, but knock on and concede a scrum, while South Africa equalise in Durban.

And an error at the play the ball, under pressure from Widnes sees Widnes take a scrum 20 metres out... and Patrick Arvan is stopped for a forward pass...

Frank Winterstein crosses again for his second and Patrick Arvan lines up the kick; strikes it beautifully through the uprights London 18 - Widnes 24, 19 minutes to go,,,

"Bit of a juggle, and its not good for the heart rate, watching Widnes, is it?" and Widnes get a penalty for a bit of red mist, and Patrick Arvan is going for the sticks to go two scores ahead ... "and that is nowhere near; and why are Widnes not tackling? Back on the half way line ... and Paddy Flynn, would you believe it, has come to the rescue again" as Gower goes through and feeds out to the wing

By the way, 400 miles away,

And after an extended period of pressure, London finally go over and Shane Rodney's conversion hits the posts London 22 - 24 Widnes with six minutes to go.

OH MY WORD, DEAR OH DEAR OH DEAR and London Broncos have won it!

That IS the hooter in the background and Widnes have lost this game on the final play of the ball, and Widnes thought they would get their first back to back wins since their return to Superleague, their first away win but it was not to be, and London Brocos haul themselves level, and ahead on points difference at the foot of the table. "Clearly Widnes moving in the right direction, but Widnes will kick themselves..."
