mrtoad
It appears that the OP is serious, although I have to admit that I thought it was a joke as well. Having read some of his other topics, I think he means what he says. Thanks for reading my older topics. I am flattered and humbled Many would not take the time to do that. No need to be flattered or humbled, oddballs always are quite memorable.

qwertz
OP, you must know by now that ALL tourist destinations attract all manner of thieves, scammers, tricksters, prostitures and liars. The worst characters I've found there were mostly my own compatriots, Thais are pussy cats in comparison. Avoid the tourism and go see Thailand, there's a lot to see and if the folks in the sticks try to hit on you - well, at least it will cost you less. les Dennis
Paul, why are you quoting the lyrics of the opening credits to Monk? It's a comedy TV show about a compulsive obsessive that is afraid of milk! I am beginning to see some alarming similarities here.
Birdman
The OP has to work on his travel anxieties (vendors, soi dogs, lady boys). The therapy pre coming to LOS would be a motorbike cruise through Southern Algeria or hitch hiking through North Eastern Colombia as proper methods. The ultimate drastic cure is a swim through Sharks Bay/South Western Australia.

But this is a Thailand forum to talk about all things Thai. So I posted my thoughts related to my coming holiday in Thailand. I remembered my last visit and how often I was pestered. How my pocket was almost picked (Not the first attempt and I am sure it won't be their last). How some vendors were rude and nasty with me because I would not buy from them and on and on. I ask myself... Hmmmm... Now if things were that bad when the place was filled with tourist, how will it be now that the tourist numbers are low? Then I talk to my friends who live there and they tell me about trusted friends stealing from them. Old friends calling out of the blue begging for money. Police who use to ignore them now give them the hairy eyeball and taking the time to search them for no real reason. Then I read the news about visitors being attacked, drugged, hung, shot, set-up in traps. I ask myself again. I say Paul.. (I answer myself by saying "Yes Paul?") Now, given the hairy situations you found yourself in during your last visit, do you think it is wise to go there when the tourist numbers are so low and you are more likely to be on the radar for those who would do you dirty? And I say, "Maybe I should wait for the High Season, even if the High Season is not so high." There is safety in numbers after all. I have been to Thailand before and I know the risks. If your there and you live risk free than in my book, you ain't living. Edited July 14, 2009 by PaulUSA302

jellymeister
I was in Pattaya last month and it was absolutely dead, literally everywhere i went i was getting hassled like never before in LOS off street vendors, massage girls, suit sellers, bar girls, motorbike taxi guys etc etc..... They were a lot ruder then when the place is full and it did get to be a bit of a pain in the ass ...... Still id much rather be in LOS then anywhere else. I like to travel out and away from the tourist spots and I am often alone since I like to walk and walk and walk and walk. I have walked myself into some bad situations.... I met a pack of dogs that still send a shiver down my spine when I think of them. Faced down guys with pipes in their hands who mistook me for someone else and offered a chance to be in a porn movei... Well... Maybe the offer of being in a porno was not so bad So while things are lean I think it would be better for me to vist when things get a little better and folks are there spending their money and I won't be seen as such an eaxy target. In a crowd of tourist, my chances of not being a victim are much better.... No. I am just a regular guy that enjoys fun and a good time and is willing to take reasonable chances for reasonable amounts of risk. Some Bungee Jump... I think that is too much risk invested for the enjoyment received. Me. I know what I like and how much risk I am willing to invent for the potential enjoyment dividends I could receive. Best way to handle that: Come here to Thailand, AND, simultaneous always be conscious, that it's a therapy and not real! Jokes aside, Paul, it seems that there is a shortcoming inside your psyche, if you are not trolling, which could be the source of that Dr.Jekyll/Mr.Hide condition. So, better than posting loudly on a well known expat forum, come to SEA and make something very, very productive. Something like a massage course at Wat Pho or a Take Wando course or learn Thai until you master that at, e.g., AIA, or, and that would be the best of all, mediation at a temple, e.g., Suan Mok. The thing that bothers me sometimes is that I tend to stand out and I try not to. But I guess it is a novelty for the Thai to see a black American when everyone else around them is Asian or White. Kinda the same for for my area. If a Thai person were to walk about, everyone would notice them because they would stick out... being that most everyone around here is either Black or White. I would love to be able to go to Thailand and just be a part of the crowd and blend in with everyone else. But this has given me an Idea for another post. Thanks! Actually i think people should try to b more alone with them self. That is 1 of the best ways to learn , learning to trust urself. To b in peace with urself .few people have been "there".If ur in peace ur never alone.People i know who taken that step hardly make any problems 4 any1,and they are a Good company!..Every1 need, and should do the "loneliness"Once, or better, several times during their lifetime. So many people are still Alone even with friends.Wonder why!But whatever "some people will never learn about the truth in life,it's like talking to the wall. ... Unnecessary lack of self-confidence. Having been far away from the average tourist tracks in Asia many times and being a tall, blond, blue eyed Westerner, I certainly was noticed everywhere. One can make the best out of that, by showing that you are a sincere, courteous foreigner, who is not only interested in the local customs and culture, but also respect it...
