Having had a few replies on the Fabrique thread from people saying there are much better places to go after hours (ie. after 1.30am) in Chiang Mai, I thought I'd find out what they are.

So for those who stay out all night, where do you like to go?

Chiangmai bar next to Discovery isn't bad, u can bring ur own bottle at no extra charge and mixers are cheap. There is outside area to chill out or 2 small rooms with hip-hop/thai and techno music.

Inside Park is pretty decent. We have been there a couple times, but I don't remember how to get there. Some where on the Northern part of town (near Tesco Lotus, I think).

My Thai coworkers and I have tried to go to Mandalay one night (all 20 & 30-something young professionals)... They were willing to turn our entire group away, as I (the only farang in the group), didn't want to pay the 300 THB entry fee.. I've never gone back there. Much rather slum it up at Spicy or the open-air Van bar next door, than pay those sort of prices.

Is Hot Shots, the place next door to Bubbles in Pornping Hotel, considered an afterhours place? Not sure what time they close, but I seem to recall being there quite late one time.

If you got girls already to lube up, a great place to cap them off is at Bossy which is down on that Japanese karaoke street near CM lan . maybe someone else can give better directions.

I wouldnt go there to pick up new ones though, as most will stick to their tables.

For anyone who may be considering to post any of the lesser known places (the sort you were introduced to by your thai friends and would not have found otherwise), I beg you please to not post them on this forum as I do not want to be surrounded by sleazy old gits trying to cop off with students half their age when I go out this weekend.

hahaha! it's a valid point.

the van is always good value for a late drink giggle and depending on your definition of 'late', the bars around the reggae quarter, cafe del sol, zoe in yellow etc are nice too. not a fan of spicy and have had some good nights at various non-farang places with thai friends too.

What the hel* kind of language is that? I thought I was hip and knew street slang, but I'm stumped with this one.

Please enlighten!

Another question, where is a good place for a mid-thirties, expat farang to go to meet single girls (not bar girls)?

Not sure how much we can say here, some of these places are Chiang Mai's best kept secrets :):D those places that operate under the radar certainly don't want/need any publicity and, as threedot says, some of their best attibutes is the lack of Farangs!

By far the best late night venue used to be Mai Peang in Khamtieng, which now sells flowerpots :D Some of the yabaa fueled gang fights were excellent entertainment :D "Inside the Park" which Mestizo mentions is a more upmarket replacement, but hidden away so not easy to find if you don't know. Few other good places up round Kamtieng too.

The mainstream places: V-club, Mandalay/The Dark, Bossy, Vit club, Discovery. Should add a health/wallet warning to a couple of those though........

Plenty of small bars in the Santitham area open late (turn down the lights/music and carry on as normal, often til 3-4 a.m.).

My favourites are two gay Karaoke places, sorry no names or directions, but probably not to the taste of most on this forum :D Anyway, the lone farang who turns up on a tuk-tuk complete with printed directions from Internet ain't allowed in!

Hot tip for late night venue searchers: Huay Kaew is the dividing line between two police districts that have totally different concepts of "closing time" and "Entertainment".

The one place, never, ever, ever: SPICY just so uncool to be seen there! Except in the company of a few ladyboys.......

Most of the member clubs I frequent after hours wouldn't let a prick with an attitiude like your's in anyway. 'Nuf said :)

If this is the same one I'm thinking of (Santitham area), tucked away down some dark sois (small venue with floor to ceiling mirrors on every wall)... then indeed it is hilarious at 5am after a decent quantity of whisky and with a large group of friends, but you need to be seriously intoxicated to enjoy the place - I would not attempt to go there as a lone farang! :)

you think it's unreasonable to want to keep a few places free from farang ex-pats and authentically thai? i don't.

The problem is that you want to keep it free from expats other than yourself.

I do much better socially as a fat old fellow who speaks OK Thai, than I ever did as a thin, young guy who didn't, and I get tired of these young whippersnappers who think that they have suddenly turned into studs as the plane landed in Thailand. You boys are here for the same reason that the old farts are, but at least we know it. :D

it's interesting and perhaps also damning that you assume that every farang is here for 'the same reason'. my girlfriend is farang too as it happens and the times we go to thai clubs is only occasionally and with thai friends who have invited us along. i feel priveleged to be invited into their world and to see a side of this country that i otherwise probably never would. so yeah, i do get a bit pissed off seeing any age of farang males there purely for 'the same reason'. it's not what that kind of club is about and is insulting to the indigenous locals in my view.

please never make the mistake that every farang male who socialises in this excellent city is here for 'the same reason'.

UG I always credited you with an above average intelligence and a fairly reasonable, open minded individual. Actually I've spoken to you in your shop and this reinforced that opinion... but that last comment has completely lowered my opinion of you.

So sorry, only about 99.9% of them are. :)

Sorry, but I've been here a long time and would guess that you are just not being honest with yourself. I've seen so many men who are not. It would be an interesting subject to discuss in person, so bring it up if you like. :)

you've carried out research? anecdotal evidence being worthless of course. and a poll of the members of this forum would i suggest be unrepresentative.

back to the topic however, as one who may be heading to the van at some stage tonight i hope the bleeding rain eases off. not the same fun of a venue when wet that place.

just got my ole girl a lube up this week, shes ready for another years service, but im talking bout my Toyota :D

I think he means if you have girls that are nearly drunk ie tipsy/lubed up, you can carry on drinking to get them drunk/capped off :)

i understood it,either im hip still, or need a hip replacement :D

I certainly have, and when it comes to "socializing" in Thailand, experience and common sense might tell you a lot more than studies that are sponsored by groups with their own agenda. :D

most would fall in the "third their age" but perhaps we should partake in a poll on S.O.G. and their respective ages, for a more accurate number. It would be a far more interesting read than "your favourite burger/pizza/mex place" thread :)

Very nicely put.

I didn't realise Bossy was open after-hours. I remember the place on the other side of the street though - Jam - that used to be a laugh with all the fallout from the karaoke joints in CM Land.
