American Thai Baby Boy Going To U.s., Has U.s. Passport

Hello,

We are planning a trip in November to the states for our son to meet his Grandma and family. He is nine months old and holds a U.S. Passport. Do we need to get him a Thai Passport?

What happens when we return back home to Thailand, does he have to get a visa? I have searched the forum and am unable to find an answer to my question.

Thanks in advance,

-O

If you don't have a thai passport to return to thailand with then your son will be subject to visa requirements like any non thai passport holder. But children under a certain age (14?) will not be subject to overstay. IMO best to get his thai passport to save any issues.

I'm assuming that your wife is Thai.

You should go ahead and get him a Thai passport. It will make things easier for him when he is older.

You will show the airline his US passport and present his US passport upon arrival in the US.

You will only show the Thai passport to the Thai immigration officials upon exiting and returning to Thailand. You will also need to make sure his departure card is completed when you leave Thailand.

I've been researching this quite a bit recently as we are also expecting a baby boy. We live in the US and are planning a trip to Thailand soon after he is born. He will be entering on the US passport this time because the application process for a Thai passport will take additional time because we also have to apply for a Thai Birth Certificate.

Have a great trip back to the states!

When I left LOS with my little ones with their fresh US passports we were stopped at passport control. They wanted to see the birth certificates of the children before we could leave immigration. Thank God I knew that this was common practise and had them ready in hand. AFAIK this is standard for farang leaving LOS with an infant.

My son is half American and half Thai. He holds both passports which makes it much easier, and no hassle. We are going for a visit in April. Save yourself a potential headache and get his Thai passport.

Get him a Thai passport, it costs 1000 baht (plus 30 baht if you want to have it send to you by mail) and only takes a couple of days to get.

There are several passport offices in Thailand and they are very efficient.

Seems the OP has been answered, but I'll chime in...

We just had our baby 10 days ago. I'm a US citizen. Wife is Thai. Born in Bangkok.

Once we get the Thai birth cert, we go to Central Bang Na to the passport office to get Thai passport.

We also made appointment (you must make appt at US Embassy in Bangkok) to get US passport. Go to their website and get the details of the documents you need.

When you leave Thailand, you leave with Thai passport.

When you arrive un US, you enter with US Passport.

When you leave the US, you leave with US Passport.

When you arrive Bangkok, you enter with Thai Passport.

It's that easy.

Get both passports!

Many thanks for all the input, everything sounds pretty straight forward. Having the birth certificates on hand makes sense. We are going to get my son's Thai passport next week.

Go kindly,
